I finished the novella

Summer by Edith Wharton
Rating: 4 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and I started reading "that book by Nabokov"

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

And I'm rereading The Dialogues of Plato. It's been decades since I picked them up.

Funny enough, I was actually planning on reading another story of his (which I didn't even realize was by him!) "The Double", and plan to after I finish Crime and Punishment! So far, I'm really enjoying it! (Also, I'm reading two different versions- one on my phone, and one copy of the book- both have different page numbers than both each other and the listing I have posted! Which makes for a bit of an interesting back and forth based on what I last read from, and a strange time updating where exactly I am in the book.)

Crime and Punishment is a lovely book- the story keeps flowing on , the character sketches are interesting and beautiful , the descriptions are so powerful and the end is superb . Happy reading !

Great review! :)

Thanks, Janice. I kept it short and sweet but I put more comments in the group read discussion thread.

Congratulations Darren.

for the record:
I joined Goodreads at the beginning of 2016;
by that time I had been logging my reading in a spreadsheet for just over a year,
so recorded on GR, my 1000 books was arrived at thusly:
13 prior to 2015
72 in 2015
100 in 2016
124 in 2017
129 in 2018
144 in 2019
131 in 2020
116 in 2021
119 in 2022
52 in 2023 as of today!
----
1000
there have also been 36 re-reads, 42 dnf's and 29 short-stories, so, you know... keepin' busy ;o)

I wasn't posting trying to fish for compliments, and I have several GR friends with well in excess of 1000 read, but I think it's nice to mark these milestones

I so agree. That's why I started on GR after DH died - I missed being able to mention I'd finished a book to someone. Here I can mark it read, rate it, add a review or maybe use it for a challenge. Taking time to notice the little things is so important. So congrats on your milestone.
As for what I'm reading, I'm working my way through Cyril Hare's Francis Pettigrew series. I've stalled a bit on Death Walks the Wood, though I really enjoyed the earlier ones.

Congratulations on *your* milestone, Darren!

Darren that is awesome! Congratulations!
I always have trouble trying to figure out how to calculate my "Books Read." It's hard to remember what books I read prior to becoming a member of Goodreads and using this website to track my reading. Also, do I include books I read as a child? Like for example the entire library of Hardy Boys books or the works of Dr. Seuss? Do I count comic books? Graphic novels? How about short stories? And what about re-reads? Or audiobooks? And if an audiobook counts, then do I count the books someone read to me in my youth?
None of this should detract from your accomplishment though, Darren. Congratulations again on hitting 1,000! I am currently at 881 in my imperfect numbering system and at present pace I should be joining that 1,000 club in 2025.... ;-)

Currently reading

I read a prose version before and hated it. But this version by poetryintranslation is much more enjoyable.

and I started reading (but I've never seen the film)

Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith

Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole - I've read this 3 times before, but since the paperback was released I decided to read it again.
*****

The Wish - I am behind on some Nicholas Sparks books and this is one of them. I've decided to do a re-read of all of his books (except his memoir since I'm not a fan of memoirs).

The question is, will you do the fandango?"
Glad I am not the only person that thinks first of Freddy Mercury when I hear that word!

The question is, will you do the fandango?"
Send a bolt of lightning, very very frightening me!

This interests me. I'm going to start looking around for some of these volumes. How are you enjoying the read?

I've never read over 4 books in a series before so the notion of 15 seems very daunting. I've had this collection on my shelf though for over a year and have really been wanting to get to it.
I've heard of suggestions to do one book a month, but that would take me a year and three months and that feels too long. Instead I think I'm going to just go with a book after each I finish rather than a time frame.
Starting with book 1: The Eye of the World

I started on it about 25 years ago and learned one thing: Do not start on a series that long that hasn’t been finished! It is an excellent series, but I never got to the end. Some day I start again from book one.

25% so far and it is super! Maybe 5 stars. It is a bit of a culture chock: Definitely not written in English. You can tell even from the Danish translation.
I love how the “story” unfolds. Mini spoiler: (view spoiler) Wow!
