Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hello, everyone! Monique and I are your hosts for TFG's 2015 Reading Challenges. Rules from last year still apply. The challenge books must be finished before F2F48/TFG Christmas Party. Surprises are in store for members who finish their challenge books and log/rate/review them here at Goodreads. (view spoiler)

So what are the purposes of our reading challenges? First is to draw members out of their comfort zones and read books that they would otherwise not have heard of or would not have read on their own. Second is to have more bookish conversations, which we're pretty sure we can't get enough of. Third is to have fun!

This year, we are shaking things up a bit. We have not one, but two reading challenges. Are you ready?

Reading Challenge 1: I Dare You to Read 2015

F2F37 attendees drew their challenge books from a box filled with strips of paper where the attendees' favorite and least liked books were written. TFG Passports were stamped to officially mark the attendees participation in I Dare You to Read.

Here is the list of challenge books for I Dare You to Read 2015:

The Best Books:
Angus: Monstress - Rhena's Best
Cary: The Mythology Class: A Graphic Novel - Tina's Best
Ella: Stargirl - Cary's Best
Gwaxa: The Fionavar Tapestry - Aaron's Best
Ingrid: The Luminaries - Monique's Best
Rollie: Burial Rites - Ella's Best

The Worst Books:
Aaron: Love & Misadventure - Rhena's Worst
Gay: Paper Towns - Gwaxa's Worst
Louize: The Werewolf Prince and I - Ingrid's Worst
Mawi: The King in Yellow and Other Horror Stories - Monique's Worst
Meliza: The Secret Life of Bees - Louize's Worst
Monique: Love Among the Geeks - Tina's Worst
Rhena: Mad About the Boy - Mawi's Worst
Ronnie: Attachments - Angus's Worst
Tina: Mission Impossible: Seducing Drake Palma - Gay's Worst

Reading Challenge 2: The Book of Dares

For those who were not able to attend F2F37, you still have the chance to participate in the reading challenges. All you need to do is consult The Oracle for your challenge book. The Oracle requires that you post in this thread three dates. These could be important or random dates (e.g. birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc.).

Once your plea to be challenged is heard, The Oracle will consult The Book of Dares. The Oracle will prophesize two challenge books based on the dates you've provided (view spoiler). It's now up to you to choose your destiny (i.e. choose which of the two you want to be your challenge book).

TFG Passports will be stamped to officially mark your participation in The Book of Dares, which means you are encouraged to join future F2Fs so that you can get the shiny sparkly stamp. But if you can't, that's okay. The Oracle will consider. And if you don't have a TFG Passport, you can either buy one from me (view spoiler) or just forego the shiny sparkly stamp.

Here is the list of challenge books for The Book of Dares (as of Aug 24):

Aaron: A Child's Christmas in Wales
Alexa: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Angus: The Bone People
Bennard: A Tale of Love and Darkness
Cary: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West
Ella: Hiroshima
Gay: The Maltese Falcon
Gwaxa: The Call of the Wild
Honeypie: Something Wicked This Way Comes
Ingrid: Heart of Darkness
Josemar: A Suitable Boy
Joy: Empire of the Sun
Joy: A Clockwork Orange
Kristel: Pale Horse, Pale Rider
Kwesi: The Hound of the Baskervilles
Louize: Cold Mountain
Lynai: The Inheritance of Loss
Maria: Neuromancer
Marie: American Tabloid
Mawi: The Secret Garden
Meliza: The Old Man and the Sea
Monique: From Here to Eternity
Rhena: The Color Purple
Rollie: The March
Ronnie: Call it Sleep
Tin: Interpreter of Maladies
Tina: Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha

And there's more! If you want more from The Book of Dares and more stamps and shinier TFG passports, just ask The Oracle for another challenge book. The Oracle will respond once it is determined that you have already finished your current challenge book from The Book of Dares.

So, who's The Oracle? (view spoiler)

And really, what's The Book of Dares? (view spoiler)

This thread is where we all check in regarding our challenge books. If you can't find a copy of your challenge books, post away! Some members can alert you of book sightings or even lend their copies to you. (view spoiler) You can also share your feels about your challenge books. Just don't forget that our group still and will always operate on mutual respect. (view spoiler)

Conquer your challenges. Happy reading! :)

Blue, Blue, Blue, the herald of The Book, choose your destiny: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man or Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. Impressionistic writing, or porn classic?

Honeypie, choose your destiny: Beowulf: A New Verse Translation or Something Wicked This Way Comes. Epic fantasy poem, or fantasy classic?

Alexa (codenameblue) | 935 comments Will go for the impressionistic one, hello James Joyce! It's my first foray into his writing so I look forward to it. I officially pick A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (though I won't close my bookish doors to Fanny Hill, it also sounds... interesting). Thanks, Oracle! Will salute your building when I pass by Katipunan ;)

Kristel (fanarchist) | 489 comments Angus: I'm gonna choose Katherine Anne Porter! I've vaguely heard of her before but never really explored so this'll be a great discovery.

Bennard wrote: "Hail, Oracle, knower of stuff. Here are the dates I offer to your omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent self: February 8, November 7, April 25"

Bennard, The Oracle determines that the gods have already bestowed auspicious quests for favored souls on February 8 and April 25. Know thy fate further by choosing two other dates.

Tin, choose your destiny: Interpreter of Maladies or Miss Lonelyhearts. The immigrant experience, or a moral satire?

Ella, you must not dare challenge the gods. Trudge thy chosen destiny and seek the gods' guidance at the next fork of the road.

Tina, the gods have long banished the Wattpad angels out of the gates of Goodreads. They are pleased with your humble offering of information. The scroll is updated.

Marie, the scroll is updated.

message 36: by Joy (new)

Joy (joyabundo) | 80 comments Thank you, O great Oracle! I am tempted to say both but if I have only one choice, let it be the Empire of the Sun for I am far more interested in World War II than World War I.

Monique (attymonique) | 2126 comments Josemar, the Oracle is currently on vacation in the Lion City, alternately hearing petitions from the whores in Geylang and frolicking with the fictional characters in Universal Studios. He did not bring with him The Book of Dares (view spoiler) so as his High Priestess, I advise a little patience from your part until he duly returns.

message 40: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Accept my gratitude, dutiful High Priestess. The Geylang courtesans and Sesame charlatans proved too much for my spiritual energy and prescience.
