Laura, Jenny & Stacey - Informal buddy read for Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy starting Dec 13th
I never heard of it. Or at least being a title on GR didn't spark my need to pick it up, until you pointed it out. I love diving into books I normally wouldn't.
Wow is Franny an interesting character. I have so many questions about her past and how she got to where she is.Have you guys started yet?
I read chapter 1. I'll read more tonight. I have some ideas but I think it will be way more to it than what I've 'figured out'.
How is it going? I am reading pretty slow right now, not because of the book though. I definitely understand now about your comment, Jenny, about breaking your heart. I can start to feel that now too. I really wanted to hug young Franny in chapter 2. Still a bit to go but looking forward to it.
I am almost done. I have been trying to read it slowly, as the prose is just gorgeous. This is one I will recommend to the right people, and reread down the line.
Well, I finished. I want to give this one more than 5 stars. I don't remember which one of you suggested it, but thank you.
Laura, start when you get to it. I hope you like it too.
I'm reading slowly. I'm about 2/3 of the way through. I have so many questions. Definitely not a book I would have picked but it is so good. Laura, thank you for recommending. How are you coming along?
I was hoping to get to it Saturday but I didn't. Life is a little crazy again now that I'm out of quarantine.Sometimes, I just pick something off the Goodreads Choice awards that I might not ususally pick. That was the case here. I'm looking forward to reading it.
Laura, have you started yet? I must say, I still think about the book a lot and have questions about a few things. Its a really good book that stays with you.Would either of you be interested in reading
?I will be picking up my copy sometime in the next week. I think I got this one off of the NPR top books of the year list.
Sure, why not?I just got some new ones as well that I may put forward for our reading pleasure. but I don't have time right now.
I keep thinking about Migrations as well. One of my favorites for the year.
Let me know when you want to start. I'm thinking early January.I can't wait to hear your new suggestions!
Alright, taking a moment when I should be doing something else...Here are some books I bought recently. Any of these look good to you guys?

No, I haven't started yet. I will though. I can grab a copy of the book you suggested, Stacey, but not until Jan 1
Jenny - what a fun list! I'm up for almost anything. I think I'm most interested in Leave the World Behind, Last Human, and Hench but they all sound interesting. I've already read The Shadows and the Circle.
Laura, do any of those three sound good to you? We can maybe do one of them after the Wild Ladies book? Or, of course, something else entirely.
Jenny wrote: "Laura, do any of those three sound good to you? We can maybe do one of them after the Wild Ladies book? Or, of course, something else entirely."I also read The Circle. I'll see which ones I can get a copy of and report back:-)
My sister told me to read the Circle. I hope it's good! She hardly ever recommends anything book wise- she is the music person, so I feel the need to be encouraging. teehee
I'm picking up my copy of Where the Wild Ladies Are tomorrow. Would you be up for starting some time later this week? I'll need to start by next week at the latest to make sure I finish. Let me know and I'll request a new thread. Also, I just finished listening to
. So great. I bet it is great in book form too, but if you enjoy a nice Irish accent like I do, the audiobook is the way to go. It also suits the style as well.
I started Migration, though I'm not far in so maybe I will pass this time around so I can get caught up.
I just checked Kindle for Where the Wild Ladies Are, and it is not available there. I will have to check my bookstore on Tuesday, but for now, I do not know when I will get the book. Tuesday if they have it in stock, a couple of weeks if they have to order it.
Boo. Let me know what you find out. I checked it out today and will have it for 3 weeks, not sure if I'll be able to renew. I'm surprised about the Kindle as my library has the ebook but who knows.Laura - how are you liking Migration so far?
I just called my bookstore, and they had a copy of the Wild Ladies book, so I will be picking it up tomorrow!
Stacey and Laura, I am happy to wait until we all have the book, or start something else in the mean time. Whatever works!
What have you guys picked up recently? Top of your book piles? Today, I bought
and
Top of my not-today pile are-
and
I have a hold on Once There Were Wolves -I'm next in queue and the book is in transit to the person ahead of me. I just bought Dark Roads today:-)
When We Were Young & Brave Serpent & Dove Hostage
top of my not today pile:
The Cousins Eternal The Good Sister The Guest List
Most of those look good, but I would probably skip When We Were Young, and Eternal. Totally up for reading any of the others.
It looks like at least some of the books have just come in, so hopefully I will have a copy soon. My library ordered 40 copies and I'm #31 on the wait list. If it takes too long, start without me and I'll start it after I finish the book 1 part of 1Q84.I have a ton of books on my TBR list but no order. Right now I'm trying to read the ones I bought earlier but haven't read. Still have 2 NK Jemison books, The Silence of the Girls, and The Lost Book of Adana Moreau.
I was busy reading things for Tower Teams (and found a few gems) and picking up whatever looked good at the library (finishing The Other Emily)
I will read the Adana Moreau book this year. I keep almost reading it. I read some good ones for tower as well. Some even from my long TBR. I am trying to get through about 100 from my TBR this year. I am about halfway through the list I made at the beginning of the year. Will I make it? Maybe?
My TBR list grows faster than I can read. I try. As long as I'm reading, I'm happy. Will slow down here soon. Classes are about to start and I'm teaching a large class for the first time on a subject I haven't dealt with in years.Oh, and Dark Roads looks really interesting. Will have to add this and happy to buddy read later!
Agree with the tbr problem that it keeps growing faster then I read. I don't mind as long as I read a few books off of it and keep enjoying my books.
Sounds a lot like physics. I want to go back to school for physics. I almost decided to do just that, but I did not love math. I did it well, but I never had a passion for it, and I thought that would be an important component of a physics career. Oh well.
If only my high school calculus teacher wasn't such a misogynistic jackass.
I thought I would check in. My libraries copies are still on order, so I can just buy the audiobook if everyone else is ready. Just let me know! Hope you are both enjoying reading something else.
I'm still waiting for my copy.I'd be up for reading Dark Roads next week if you both are interested.

Synopsis
Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool—a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime—it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds. When Franny's dark secrets catch up with her, how much is she willing to risk for one more chance at redemption?
Epic and intimate, heartbreaking and galvanizing, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is an ode to a disappearing world and a breathtaking page-turner about the possibility of hope against all odds.
