If I remember correctly Addie dates both men and women throughout her life, so I think it would count.

Addie dates both men and women, but I imagine it's a little up in the air whether or not it counts as historical fiction. I think the parts that take place in the past are definitely well under half the book, but there are chapters that are historical fiction, so I suppose it depends on how you define the genre.

Yeah, I was thinking there wasn't enough of the historical to qualify as historical fiction.

Mandie (mystickah) | 218 comments I'm going a little out of the box and reading Ring Shout for this prompt.

I saw Dread Nation suggested on here so that's what I decided to go with. It was a great read, especially if you like historical zombies 😁

Julia | 165 comments Candace,

I'm planning to read Giovanni's Room for task #4. (To go back to a discussion from January.)

How Much of These Hills Is Gold is very, very good for this task. I also have Rita Woods' Remembrance and Ring Shout on my 'list.'

Shoshana,

Did you know there's a sequel to Dread Nation? It's Deathless Divide. Who knew I loved historical zombies?

Great choice!

Whitney (whitters23) | 6 comments Currently reading A Duke, the Lady and a Baby by Vanessa Riley. I randomly picked it out because it was a free borrow during May on Hoopla and I realized that it would work for this prompt.

A Duke, the Lady, and a Baby (Rogues and Remarkable Women, #1) by Vanessa Riley

Cato (cato-the-cactus) I just finished Bodies of Water by V.H. Leslie and I would recommend it! It's a novella with subtle horror, so it was a quick read. One half of the book is set in Victorian London and I was amazed to find LGBTQ+ representation in there.

Sara (fawksylibrarian) | 2 comments I read THE GREAT BELIEVERS by Rebecca Makkai for this. It's chronicles the AIDS crisis in Chicago. Several POC character present but not main, does touch on the added challenge of being a POC and dealing with AIDS. It's a slow burn but ended up being really good (fortunately it was for book club so I had to finish it and I'm glad I did).

Juulna | 14 comments Dread Nation is some seriously awesome spec fic.
Kindred is a classic. Definitely recommend both!

message 114: by Sara (new)

Sara | 8 comments I would recommend The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom by Margarita Engle The Surrender Tree Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom by Margarita Engle for the history fans, and Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee for those looking for a funny cowboy adventure/romance focused on female friendship.

Jessica (jessboiacono) | 1 comments Do you think Naamah works? It's both POC and LGBTQ+, but unsure about the historical fiction part...

Thanks!

message 116: by Summer (new)

Summer (speaking_bookish) (speaking_bookish) | 5 comments Anything in the Parasolverse (fantasy, steampunk, supernatural, historical fiction) would work for this prompt since there are LGBTQ+ characters in all her books. These books are excellent.

message 117: by Summer (new)

Summer (speaking_bookish) (speaking_bookish) | 5 comments I forgot to add the parasolverse author: Gail Carriger. The book titled Soulless.

message 118: by Megan (new)

Megan | 4 comments Would A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende count? It's definitely historical fiction. It follows a Chilean family from Spanish roots. Not sure of their race, though. Would Chilean characters count as POC characters?

message 119: by Bethany (new)

Bethany | 12 comments Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie

message 120: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabethlk) | 365 comments I thought about counting a couple of different things I've read so far this year that would fit this task, but I've decided not to use historical romance for this category as that is part of my regular routine and it isn't out of the usual for me to read historical romances about POC or LGBTQ+ characters.

I've decided I'm going to count one of my current reads, The Silence of Bones by June Hur, for this task. It's excellent so far.

Megan | 130 comments I recently finished Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and decided to slate it in for this prompt.

message 123: by Octavia (new)

Octavia Cade | 139 comments It's been on my list of books to read for ages, so I used this task to finally pick up The Magpie Lord by K.J. Charles and it was fantastic. I'm so glad there are sequels! I want to read them all...

message 124: by Elise (new)

Elise Taylor | 44 comments I ended up reading We Were Witches for this since it was categorized as historical fiction on Audible. Also, can I just say that it is super upsetting to have the early 1990s characterized as historical fiction?
