Is it possible to restrict other members to vote on books in a list I've created, namely Books recommended in Self-Help That Works? Or just delete the list? I'm trying to create an exclusive list where I solely manage the membership. I found out that is possible for me to do if a librarian creates a static list for me. I didn't know I could request creating a static list. Another member voted on a book in the public list I created that is not referenced in that source. Pardon me if I put this query in the wrong folder, I'm still learning.

lethe | 16359 comments Lists are not personal, but belong to the community. Anyone is allowed to vote or add books to them.

Lists may only be made static if they contain a fixed set of books, f.e. "Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels".

Yea, I think I was able to figure that out when I asked the question. Awesome reply, though.

Now the $64,000 question is how do I change my list to a static list?

Single word answer: yes.

Emily | 17467 comments It was a yes or no question, so a single word answer is indeed appropriate.
I was just clarifying.
Please link to the list and let us know what needs to be removed, and we can make it static.

Hence the clarifying information to lessen the possibility of message "ping-pong".

The List:Books recommended in Self-Help That Works

You can remove the title "From Make-Believe Love To Real Love"
added by some member censored, and the list states a one censored as a member who voted in the list.

All other titles were added my me, myself, and I (take your pick).

Whew!

Emily | 17467 comments Done.
Please remove the user's name who voted for the book. We are not allowed to name users in this particular group.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I am unable to add books to this list. When I click on the Vote For This Book button, nothing happens and the book is not added (to the list in question).

Well, that is what happens if a list is made static.

Definition of static: "fixed, stable, stationary; not changing or moving." (Shorter Oxford English Dictionary)

That is why you should only request a list be made static if it is complete.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I can only create a list if it's made such that anyone can add to it, thus allowing the risk of any member tampering with it, as what happened in my case.

I request making it static in the assumption to only allow myself (and maybe the librarians) to update it. One would have thought the site would have hidden (or displayed as hidden) the Vote buttons if they are disabled for static lists. Or is that a bug?

bug
An error in a computer program or system.
‘Without knowing these things, you probably have bugs running on your system, and never know it!’

I've only been a user of this site since November, I don't have librarian skill level here.

I thought this request would be simple common sense.

common sense
[mass noun]
Good sense and sound judgement in practical matters.
‘I hope that a practical, common-sense application will be applied to the various issues that will arise.’

Remember the goal of the original request if you wish to reread it:

I'm trying to create an exclusive list where I solely manage the membership.

E.g. does this site allow secured lists?

If not possible, can you forward my request to a more capable "librarian"? (Assuming that's the correct term of the role here and it complies with the definition in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary)

Emily | 17467 comments I have reverted the static function and you can add books to it again. When you are finished listing the books, you can let us know and we will make it static again.
If it is an ongoing project, you can let us know when you have books to remove, and we will do that instead of making the list static.
All suggestions for site functionality changes should be sent to Goodreads directly through the Help site or Contact Us link.

And I already told you in msg #2 that that is not possible:
Lists are not personal, but belong to the community. Anyone is allowed to vote or add books to them.

Lists may only be made static if they contain a fixed set of books, f.e. "Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels".
Your response in msg #3 certainly made it seem as if you were already aware of that, but apparently not.

1. Lists can never be exclusive to one member. Everyone has the right to add books to a list and/or vote for them, within the parameters of that list. I.e. if another user wants to add a title that is mentioned in the Self-Help That Works book, they may do so. If they add other titles, they can be deleted by librarians.

2. Do not make a list static if you still want to add or vote for books, because you won't be able to anymore.

Hopefully it is clear like this?

What's still seemingly not clear to you is the intent of the request and/or the retarded policy of the site. Only "Goodreads" knows for sure if the latter is by accident or by design. There's no common sense way to enable what I'm trying to do.

A static list must allow additions at some point so one can enter titles to it, otherwise all static lists would be empty. There needs to be lists that are only updatable by one (or a select group) at a time, otherwise any member can corrupt it, as what happened in my case.

Just delete the list then if you can understand that. It's incomplete (it was a process that would take me months to complete) and now can't be properly maintained. Totally dumb policy if you stop to think about it.

I'm updating your site's information on my own time and nickel, and this hassle is not worth it. "Goodreads" can find another sucker.

It's no wonder that this site is rife with data integrity issues.

You can forward this message to the site's authorities as a complaint of the their administration policies, assuming that doesn't encroach on the responsibility of your department.

As are we.

See message #12 for info about what to do regarding the list. It is no longer static.
There's no reason to delete it.
We are always happy to remove books that do not fit the parameters of the list.
