I read this around 2005-2010, and I don't remember cover art/ author. There were multiple gods, and the boy wanted to be sponsored by one who was a trickster, powerful, and popular. However, early in the book he gets in a scrape and to escape must accept Lady Luck's offer of sponsorship. He is angry about it at first, but I think I remember that it works out for him. I believe he got involved in some game/ competition, which was very important in the worldbuilding and the sponsors were necessary for success, but I don't quite remember.
