SOLVED. YA Fantasy. Young man is searching for his brother's ghost (after he just died from cancer). Spoilers ahead. [s]

I read this book about 13 years ago in high school. It starts with a young man in a small village that impregnates a merchants daughter only to fall to his death after having sex with her, his soul is split upon his death. It then flash forwards to two brothers, the older has recently died of cancer and the younger has taken up looking for his spirit in a graveyard with the help of a young woman from his school. Over the course of the book the spirit of the deceased brother watches over his sibling and comments on living peoples auras and the various colors they take depending in their emotions. Eventually the younger brother and the young woman grow closer emotionally and the spirit brother deems its time for him to move on and upon doing so rejoins with his whole spirit from the begining of the book.

I want to say that the title is "Whisper" or something along those lines refering to silence or quiet, and was written by someone with the name "Ralph" so I assume a man author.
