Tower of Dawn - unnecessary?

My library didn't have a copy so I didn't read it. Few bits in the last book probably would have made more sense if I had but I don't feel like I missed any of Aelin's journey so I'm not desperate to read it now
I liked the book but I do think it being 700 pages was a tad excessive and I also would have preferred to have more of Borte cause she was a highlight for me and I really hope we get more about her in any future books that come out
I agree, it was much longer than it needed to be. But I love chaol, and his relationship with Yrene was so fulfilling, I didn't mind this book
It was necessary. And it was a whole new culture and the relationship between Yrene and Chaol needed the time to develop. 700 pages to me was perfectly fine for this book
I mean it is important to the general plot of KoA as there is a lot that happened that ends up being very important. On the other hand it’s not a part of the Rowan + Aelin and co plotline so much. But there are a lot of new characters as well which are very important in KoA
I mean u can skim it. Personally after you read it once, you gather all the important information so read it once I’d say
Most of the important information is in the last 200 pages or so. So if you're not very interested in Chaol you can skim the earlier pages. That's what I did. Not because I don't love Chaol, he's one of my favs, but because I needed to know what happened to Aelin after that EoS ending! :D
I really wish that they had published this before EoS. Because I feel like the reason so many people find this unnecessary is because it was torture having to read this before knowing what happens with Aelin after that EoS cliffhanger. That's also why in the readathon we're reading this before EoS...
I mean it was supposed to be a short story but Sarah realized it would make more sense for some of the reveals to take place in TOD rather than KOA; due to the fact she could write all southern continent reveals in here and not need to do lots of travelling between the two in KOA
I mean it is technically over 1,000 pages Sarah said. They just had to format it so it wouldn't break the spine of the books, so that's why the pages are so thin! I don't know if they forced her to cut anything, but I'm pretty sure they said it was unreasonable to have a YA book over 1,000 pages. And the whole it may break the spine thing. So I do think if the font was bigger (bc it is a tad smaller than the other books, right?) it would be over 1,000 pages.
I personally loved Tower of dawn and it is definitly neccersary for the story as a whole and for kingdom of ash if oyu are skipping it it is such a waste also to enjoy kingdom of ash and experience it on the fullest. I especially loved how Chaol his isuea didnt get fixed and he was better and everything was ok at the end of the book , like he doesnt get his feelings in his legs back and has to stay in a wheelchair but it is about him accepting it and learning to life with it wich sends such a powerfull message that is so important because many times things dont leave and you have to learn how to accept them
MeReadsTooMuch wrote: "This is the book I gave up on and therefore never finished the series because of. 😐"it was good! i agree it was torture to read because of EoS ending but there is a nice story in there along with a ton of necessary information and context that will make some moments in KoA make sense and also break your heart so it is better if you read it! the last book is definitely worth it!
I love Yrene to death but she could have done so much better than Chaol. Sorry but I do not like him much. He was fine at the beginning but how he treated Aelin in QOS I kind of wanted to punch him. Maybe paralyze him completely..... yrene deserved way better. I feel like it would have been cool for Aelin and Rowan to travel there to ally with the emperor and see yrene in the castle and they become friends. So with that the book could be earlier in the series before the need of QOS. Or yerene was called to adarlan to heal people because of her gift. But the king wouldn’t know she can heal people from the valg.
So after she meets Aelin and her court she heals chaol. And so they slowly capture the valg and fix them and weaken the army. But it doesn’t work well so they do the war and everything happens like it did with the rest of the story. What if she gets to be best friends with elide
While it was a good read was necessary to add plot to the series, I suffered through it. It had major themes that many could relate to which added a level of depth to the book, I just felt like it was missing something that would've made it more bearable. I think that the need to find out what happened to Aelin, Rowan, the rest of the group, and also the war preparations were clouding my brain to not fully appreciate the book. All of these were factors toy enjoyment of the book.
I actually skipped Tower of Dawn and then read it after I finished KoA because I was so worried for Aelin!

I honestly wish I could have skipped it but it would have bugged me deep inside if I skipped one of SJM's books, especially if I went out of order in the series. It's got a lot of important info for the future of events and characters but I did not need a whole book dedicated to Chaol's pity party. Nesryn is awesome, I just don't like Chaol, sorry. I just really wish that we could've gotten the info without such a long story, it had too much Chaol and not enough Aelin and Rowan for me lol
I hated Chaol throughout the series and was so tempted to skip ToD. But I am so so so glad I didn't! I think the book was great (in usual SJM fashion) and provided great background for KOA. My only complaint would be that if Chaol got his own book, other characters like Dorian and Manon definitely should have too 😫
