Calvin (calvinium) Well. Since I am going to have a bash at the ATY 2021 challenge, I thought I may as well start the winter challenge which will run into 2021. I am picking the shortest phrase though! I'm limiting myself to books where the first word of the title is the corresponding letter in the phrase (not including definite or indefinite articles), just to see if I can fulfil the phrase with books sitting on my TBR pile. Let's see..

✅ D - Dear Mrs. Bird by A.J. Pearce

✅ R - The Royal We (Royal We, #1) by Heather Cocks

✅ E - Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay

✅ A - Alys, Always by Harriet Lane

✅ M - A Murder Is Announced by Agatha Christie

✅ I - Inside Out by Chris McGeorge

✅ N - Not the Only Sky by Alyssa Warren

✅ G - Grunt The Curious Science of Humans at War by Mary Roach

✅O - Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie

✅F - The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer

✅S - Slay on Tour (Slay, #2) by Kim Curran

✅N - A Noise Downstairs by Linwood Barclay

✅O - Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales

✅W - What Lies Between Us by John Marrs

Yep, totally can! :-)

Calvin (calvinium) Decided I'd read this in word order, so Dear Mrs Bird is done, I'm now on to The Royal We.

message 3: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) And that's The Royal We finished. Now for a complete change of pace with Elevator Pitch

message 4: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) E - Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay

Completed. Whoever decided to market it as a fast paced thriller should have a word with themselves.

And so on to:

A - The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker

message 5: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Slight change of plans, as I found The Animators to be intolerable and have abandoned it at the 120 page mark. The thought of spending 250 more pages in a book where I loathed the two main characters was just....too much. So now A is:

A - Alys, Always by Harriet Lane

message 6: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Apparently, "A" is a cursed letter for me, as Alys, Always really didn't work for me. Constantly comparing it to Notes on a Scandal wasn't really wise, either, since that book is FAR superior.

Anyway, M is here now and it's an Agatha Christie, so I should be in safer hands....

A Murder Is Announced by Agatha Christie

message 7: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) And M is done, as A Murder Is Announced is now completed.

Made a slight tweak and for I, I've opted for something I own in physical form and really want to read, so it means I can read it alongside Not the Only Sky which is on the Kindle.

message 8: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Well, that's the disappointment of Inside Out done with, now to carry on with Not the Only Sky

message 9: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Sometimes I look at a book and wonder what it was that made me buy it. Such was the case with Not the Only Sky and as is often the outcome, having finished it, I'm none the wiser as to why I bought it.

So now it's on to G with Grunt The Curious Science of Humans at War by Mary Roach

message 10: by Calvin (last edited Dec 29, 2020 04:15PM) (new)

Calvin (calvinium) One word down! Two words/six letters to go. Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War was an actually excellent 5 star read, LOVED IT. And now, another Agatha Christie, a guaranteed good read.

Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie

message 11: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Finished Ordeal by Innocence yesterday afternoon and decided to take the rest of the day off before starting anything else. Also decided to swap out my F choice and go for The Female Persuasion over Far from the Tree

message 12: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Two words down! Ok, shouldn't be such a huge achievement, since "of" is only two letters, but come on. Also, The Female Persuasion was excellent.

So now it's on to Signs for Lost Children. Four books to go!

message 13: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Welp! Turns out reading something as serious as Signs for Lost Children was NOT the thing on the day the country goes back into lockdown. Realised I need lighter fare with a more escapist feel, so what could be better to swap in than Slay on Tour

message 14: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) And that's Slay on Tour done with. Already 100 pages in to A Noise Downstairs so should be on to O and the home stretch before tomorrow.

message 15: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) And now on to the penultimate book. I like that I'm ending this with a double whammy of YA. First up, Only Mostly Devastated.

message 16: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) On to the final book of DREAMING OF SNOW and decided to make a last minute swap as I picked up What Lies Between Us for a main prompt read today and realised it would actually serve a purpose here. I'm also thinking I might have a crack at another phrase so....

message 17: by Calvin (last edited Feb 21, 2021 03:18PM) (new)

Calvin (calvinium) ✅W - What If It's Us (What If It's Us, #1) by Becky Albertalli

✅I - The Inheritance of Solomon Farthing by Mary Paulson-Ellis

✅N - Not on Fire, but Burning by Greg Hrbek

✅T - The Trick to Time by Kit de Waal

✅E - Eureka by Anthony Quinn

✅R - The River by Peter Heller

✅W - Watching from the Dark (DCI Jonah Sheens, #2) by Gytha Lodge

✅O - The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

✅N - Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl

✅D - A Darker Domain (Karen Pirie, #2) by Val McDermid

✅E - Edinburgh by Alexander Chee

✅R - Remember Me by Amy McLellan

✅L - Life Drawing by Robin Black

✅A - Agatha Raisin Pushing up Daisies (Agatha Raisin, #27) by M.C. Beaton

✅N - Now You See Me (Lacey Flint, #1) by Sharon J. Bolton

✅D - Dead Scared (Lacey Flint, #2) by Sharon J. Bolton

message 18: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Ok well that's DREAMING OF SNOW complete, so now I should really get cracking on completing the books for WINTER WONDERLAND

message 19: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Book 1 of Phrase 2 is done, as I whipped through What If It's Us in no time.

message 20: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Half way through WINTER now, as both The Inheritance of Solomon Farthing and Not on Fire, but Burning are done with and so it's on to

The Trick to Time by Kit de Waal

message 21: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) On to the last book of WINTER WONDERLAND now! Made a last minute change of book, as Now You See Me was SO GOOD. Luckily, the next in the Lacey Flint series starts with a D, so I'm finishing the challenge with Dead Scared.

message 22: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) WINTER WONDERLAND is complete!
