Can you name any popular books you thought were a waste of time?

Sofia (sofloaf) | 3116 comments Mod
I didn't like Clockwork Angel, From Blood and Ash, or City of Bones.

Sofia (sofloaf) | 3116 comments Mod
Oh, and The Lunar Chronicles. Way overhyped.

message 4: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments I thought that Alice's Adventures In Wonderland were a waste of time...

message 5: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth City of Bones
Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight

Didn't hate but I think are overhyped:
Illuminae
An Ember on the Ashes
Six of Crows

eli ♡ | 469 comments I tried reading Illuminate, but I just got annoyed with how they only showed files and evidence. I think they might've had some dialogue, but I can't remember since I tried to read it so long ago.

message 8: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments Yeah there was some dialogue but most of it was logs and that was kinda annoying.

Harry Potter and Percy Jackson oop.

A lot of books I can see why they're hyped, but other books, like John Green's and Nicola Yoon's are...interesting.

Booktastically Amazing (booktasticallyamazing) | 1477 comments I have to say, and forgive me for saying: Sadie, One of Us is lying, The Raven Cycle, Shadows by Jennifer L., The Magnolia Sword, Set Fire to The Gods, The Shadow Between us.
And So. Many. Others. Like, I appreciated the work, but it either fell short or it was like an avalanche. Brace for coveeeeeerrrr!

I didn't like PJ either. The only Riordan series I like are Trials of Apollo and Magnus Chase.

message 13: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments I am not going to try any of Jennifer L.'s books because I have a feeling I would hate them (based on Sofias reviews)

The book whose popularity I CANNOT understand is Heartstopper. It's literally the most generic, tumblr-y BL book I've ever read.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I enjoyed the story, but it did feel generic. That's why when I want to read unique comics, I just go on Webtoon.

Yeah Webtoon is a really good website for BL that isn't just romance (which is what I prefer)
IDK I just thought it was too cute and not much of anything else.

Booktastically Amazing (booktasticallyamazing) | 1477 comments @ATheReader Definitely The Lux Series (one of the few ones I've read *snort*) For your sake, please do not read the novellas, a friend of mine read one (the first, disgusting) and didn't even finish the series. Although to be fair, the novella was horrible.

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments i know you guys gave said some of these, but i'll reiterate bc i totally agree: aeita, pjo (hoo is sm better), john green, sjm, rainbow rowell, simon vs the homosapiens agenda, the alchemist by michael scott (yes, that's a real author), left behind, narnia, the siren, be more chill, the raven cycle, wonder, artemis fowl, incarceron, truly devious

these ones are bad, but have been getting what they deserve recently:
divergent, the selection

message 30: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments @tianna i really liked the first one, but felt as if it could have been a standalone. it felt dragged. the last one was an atrocity, and the second one was enjoyable, but kind of pointless imo to the grand scheme of things

I didn't like Shades of Magic, either. It was so dull.

message 34: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments @tiana i got lotr vibes... like almost rip off, but with different worlds. i enjoyed the writing and the world and rhy but that's most of it lol. yeah, i totally found that annoying

message 35: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments @athereader truly devious was half interesting towards the end, BUT THE SECOND BOOK WAS FULL OF CLOWNERY. i totally roasted that book in my review lmao. it does NOT get better

oh wow- *me sad because I bought the first book and was kinda excited for the series but has a feeling I won't like it and I will agree with you* *but will still read the first book because I don't want to waste my money* great

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments @athereader the first one was kind of enjoyable. the rest are trash.

@tianna i agree with his writing. it took me forever to read that series. i really like the last 2 books. sam and frodo and one of my favorite duos. i recommend the audiobooks to help you get through it!

Laura (lauralikeslit7) | 93 comments For all you hardcore Potterheads I have a question: Do you like HP because you genuinely think it's one of the best series you've ever read (technically, as in plot wise, characters, execution, diversity) or because of the nostalgia?

message 41: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauralikeslit7) | 93 comments I wanted to read it sometime but I'm not sure anymore since JKR is being problematic and since I'm older than most when they first read it and I'm super critical, I won't like it much if I don't have nostalgia associated with it.

I'm a fan. It's not the best series I've ever read but the plotting, worldbuilding, and characters are fantastic. Nostalgia also contributes, but I do think it is very well-written.

I suggest you read it and form an opinion for yourself!

message 44: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauralikeslit7) | 93 comments My brother has had the series on our bookshelf for years but I just haven’t gotten around to it! I might read it eventually but it’s not a priority of mine, especially because it’s so long so I have to be in the right state of mind in order to commit lol.

I wouldn't say it's the best series I've ever read, but it's pretty good. There's some good plot twists, especially on the latter books.

message 46: by the bard (new)

the bard (ken97) | 836 comments i try to separate the art from the artist as much as possible without supporting the artist. jkr is, in my opinion, a clown, but that doesn't make her art less valuable. i read the series first in sixth grade and, honestly, didn't care for the first two books. the third one is better, and the last ones are really good. they're really hard to put down. i enjoy the world and (most) characters, however, there is a lack of diversity. calling dumbledore gay without showing it is pointless. it explicitly states in the books that hermione is white. it has its flaws, but i do believe that it is an enjoyable series. if you decide to read it, keep in mind that the first 2 or 3 are kind of formulaic and that they greatly improve throughout the series.

message 47: by ATheReader (new)

ATheReader (athereaderofbooks) | 2746 comments I agree. I love the series and hate the author.

Tough question.
I mean, it's very nostalgic for a lot of people, and I get that, but my original idea about Harry Potter was that it was way overhyped, and I wasn't going to read it. Ever. Then my friend got obsessed, and I got obsessed. There truly is little to no diversity. (I agree with Kennedy, JKR is a clown.) And plot wise the first two books are similar. The third was decent. My favorite was the seventh. I like the characters, but again, not much diversity. They are executed quite well.

message 49: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauralikeslit7) | 93 comments Thanks for the feedback guys! I think I’ll give the books a shot sometime in the future once I tackle my never ending tbr a bit more. Maybe if I become a fan, I can convince my non-reader friends who are only potterheads to read more with me too 👀

message 50: by katie ❀ (new)

katie ❀ (whisperngpages) i have too many books that i think are overhyped. i didn't like the hunger games, tog, harry potter, and the raven boys.

the hunger games were just plain boring, tog was just *blech*, harry potter was annoying, and trb was boring too. and the list goes on.

for hp, i quit on the fourth book because i was suffering. i didn't care for any of the characters, or what was happening, and harry was just the worst. i can't separate the work from the author, so i'll never support this series.
