Can you describe the illustrations - e.g., simple or detailed, realistic or cartoon-like, painted watercolors or bold graphics, light or dark colors? Do they remind you of a similar illustrator or picture book author?
Detailed but cartoon-like and on the lighter side. Not watercolor. Unfortunately that's all I can really remember.

The hardcover picture book I'm trying to remember is about a little boy who's put to bed by his mom but tries to warn her about a monster (or possibly dragon) that he sees out the window. The mom assures him everything will be fine, but of course when she leave the monster breaks in! He takes the kid as a toy and flies into the clouds where I believe the monster tries to play with the kid but some other monster bullies try to steal the kid away. A bigger monster scares the bullies off and you discover that she's the original monster's mom, and she tells him to put the kid back where he found him. The mom and son monster return the kid to his bed, where the kid is reunited with his mom who is none the wiser.
This was a picture book with not a whole lot of prose that I remember. I do seem to remember lines such as "But mooooom" but that could be me completely making things up. I'd imagine this book was published early 90s, though maybe it was published in the late 80s.
