Nimrat | 2356 comments So today we got results for the bio test and I got 26/30.
Sir literally just cut my marks because my diagram and handwriting wasn't neat. And because I didn't write the answers in the wording of the book.
Everything else was correct. I feel like I'm finally understanding bio rather than cramming it.
Like earlier in many tests I was getting 30/30 but I used to cram and write in the exact wording of the book. Not to mention sir didn't use to cut marks for neatness earlier.

So next time let's try to not cram but still write in the wording of the book.

what the hell, why is the teacher cutting points for not wording it like in the book? isn't paraphrasing better because it shows actual understanding? also taking points for neatness feels kind of silly...

Ooh. Yeah, the hype can really set some unrealistic expectations for books.
The fact that it's narrated by death is what draws me the most about this book. So I'm glad that it's done well.
Also, there's one question that always bothers me when it comes to historical fiction and that is "How much do I need to know about that time period or that event before starting the book, to understand it fully?"
This is what prevents me from picking up these books.

So, what would you say about the book thief in this context?

Ughhh. Those teachers are the worst. They say they want you to understand the topic deeply...but if you don't copy-paste your answers from the book, then you score less?? What!??
But sadly, this is how our education system works. During boards, we were given a strict warning to write our history answers exactly 'word-to-word' or we won't get any marks for that.

Tbh I don't think that you have to understand the events. But when I was reading it, I felt proud of myself when I remembered certain things which I read in history last year.
So if you are interested, sure you should search about World War 2. It's really fascinating tbh.
But you don't NEED TO know anything about the World War to read this book.

Also I think this was my 3rd Historical Fiction book. And most of the times, I feel like I wouldn't enjoy Historical Fiction, but most of the times it ends up being more about the fictional characters than about the real events that had happened.

IKR? If I'm able to paraphrase something and the answer is still correct I feel like I actually understood that topic. But the whole Indian Education system just promotes cramming...
It is. Like first thing, my drawing isn't that good. Everyone has their own talents. And well about handwriting...my handwriting is always readable. No one ever tells me that my handwriting is not readable. It's just not that neat.
Well I just wish our examiners don't do that. The marks for these tests are not really taken into consideration but still...

Oh okay. That makes sense.
I do remember stuff from my History lessons, so I think that should do for now.
Ah yes, I think since mostly they deal with the struggles of one particular character/family or a small number of people during that time, it should be easier to understand without knowing full context every time.

I honestly wish I had a photographic memory like Sophie from Keeper of the Lost Cities. I think then the teachers would be happy.

Yeah. Specially SST. We have like a thousand dates to remember and they also expect us to just write word to word.

message 916: by Akshita (new)

Akshita | 823 comments Yeah lol. These teachers really think we have some superpowers.
Fortunately, in ICSE, we didn't have to learn any dates at all. They think it's useless as no one would remember those anyway. And if needed in higher competition exams, dates can be crammed just then. So that was a positive :D

yeah that system is really something... this just shows that in the end it's not actually about learning but rather memorising and stuff
it's just so unfair to include handwriting/drawing in marks!

IKR? I LOVED THEIR THINKING BEHIND THIS. WHY WASTE SO MUCH TIME CRAMMING USELESS DATES??

The only year I remember (except for British rule dates of course) is Battle of Plassey: 1757
Idk why I remember that

Ooh. Yes I remember that too.

We studied that in 2019. 2018 and 2019 were the golden years of my life, when there was no such thing called corona, or teachers-putting-questions-from-out-of-syllabus. And also I was in the choir in those years.
