Welcome to the next Around the Year in 52 Books seasonal challenge. Our Winter challenge starts on December 1, 2020 and finishes on February 28, 2021.

This challenge will be a bit different from previous seasonal challenges. We are tackling an A-Z challenge!

How It Works
For this challenge, you will be trying to fulfill the letters in ONE of three phrases:
- WINTER WONDERLAND (16)
- DREAMING OF SNOW (14)
- HELLO NEW BEGINNINGS (18)

You can fulfill these letters by using the first letter of the title, the first letter of the author's first or last name, or the first letter of the main genre of the book.

Example:
- W: What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli (Title)
- I: Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue (Author's First Name)
- N: Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (Author's Last Name)
- T: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (Genre: Thriller)

How to join the challenge
1. Set up a thread to keep track of your books for the challenge. You can create a new thread for your challenge in this folder. You can also check out the Community Spreadsheet and track your reading there.

3. If you need ideas or inspiration for any of the prompts, or you’d like to share recommendations then you can do so here.

4. When you’ve completed all of the letters for one phrase, post the details in this thread.

What books can be counted?
Generally books should be 100 pages or more, but if you’ve found the perfect book and it’s 90 pages then it’s your choice whether to count it. Or, if you’re really stuck on one task and you want to read a picture book or short story just to mark it as complete then go right ahead. The aim is to have fun and enjoy what you read, so nobody is going to judge anyone else for their book choices.

If you have any questions about the challenge then you can post them in this thread. The FAQs in post two below will also be updated as people ask questions so you might find your question has been answered there.

Happy reading, and we hope you enjoy the challenge!

Edie | 1149 comments Sounds like fun. Can a book count for more than one of the categories?

Nope, one book per letter! The challenge is just to complete one phrase, but you can work on a second and third phrase as you finish the other ones.

So if one were to complete ALL the phrases, one would have to read 48 different books. Wow, that's a lot of books. But careful reading of the task suggests that the challenge is to complete ONE phrase which makes it fairly comparable to other seasonal challenges.

Exactly, Edie. The goal is to finish the challenge using one phrase, but if you're feeling ambitious, you could go for more!

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments Is it acceptable to use the first letter of the second word if the title starts with "The"? I have a lot of the titles on the horizon.

Yes, you can choose to use or ignore “A”, “An”, and “The”.

viemag | 180 comments Hi: Is it too late to enter the Winter Reading Challenge? I can't start a thread in the tracking folder so am thinking it is too late.

message 10: by Ali (new)

Ali | 66 comments I don't know why you can't make a thread but you're 100% not too late to start! It's 6 days into a 3 month challenge so you're not even behind :)

Good luck!

You absolutely can start now. I'm not sure why you aren't able to make a thread in the folder? Are you using the app or the website?

Kendra | 2127 comments Does 'graphic novel' count as a genre?

Hi Emily: Thanks for your reply. After you said I should be able to make a thread and I went back and looked and I just wasn't looking in the correct spot. I was expecting a comment box. I managed to get it done now. Thanks. Sometimes, I wonder about myself. Viemag!

If the book has multiple authors, can you use either?

Yes, Trish!

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Can I count the name of the narrator of an audiobook as a letter?

We typically say author only, but you can interpret your challenge as you l like!

So I realized I can use it for the genre, so no need to "cheat" with the narrator. :)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments If the author uses initials instead of a first name can I use either initial? For example V. E. Schwann. Can I use the E?

message 21: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11240 comments Mod
No, I'd say it should be first name or last name. So V or S for V.E. Schwann.
