This was a book that tries to stand out among the Hey-I-Turned-Eleven-And-Got-Invited-To-Attend-A-Magic-School throng, but it didn't really do that for me. I didn't really get to know the characters enough to truly care about them. The mean girls were a bit one-sided and I didn't see a reason for them to act that way. I also didn't get how the (view spoiler)[stolen amulet was supposed to give her the mental powers when she had experiences before the amulet that hinted at the gift. And the whole scene where she accidentally steals the necklace? Ridiculous. How do you have time to arrange the other things on the shelf and move the label and not have time to put the necklace back? (hide spoiler)] In spite of some plot holes and general lack of details, I was entertained. A young reader who enjoys magical realism will enjoy it.
