Thanks Janice!

Katrisa | 4460 comments So Janice, I am glad you gave me a taste of writing tasks because I got to write a task for the Seasonal Reading Challenge group you told me about. And writing the tasks for this came in handy, but now I am getting a taste of what it is like to moderate a task! I know we joke about how you can be a "meanie" but now I get it! I have a certain vision for my task and some things just don't fit the VISION! lol! And I know I am one to stretch the tasks sometimes :) so I just want to say - I get it!

message 203: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments And it's not that easy to convey that vision. Congrats on getting to write a task for the SRC. That's awesome. :)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2556 comments Help! All of a sudden, Goodreads isn't letting us link to other sites in the comments. THis is a problem if I edit my working space for the Interactive, but it is also a problem for posting our interactive things if we can't get a picture of the museum website to post. Ideas? Or do we just have to find a way to save the picture and post.

Same problem, solved it with linking to the image (img src="....) for now, I don't know if they won't let us do it as well in the future

message 208: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I seem to be able to link to another website. Maybe it was a temporary glitch.

message 209: by Vicki (last edited Aug 22, 2021 07:46PM) (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments I've come across it too editing my planning posts. I had to delete anything with a renamed link. Probably because it's a phishing tactic.

I had a comment on a review here lately that looked like the "... more" to enlarge it but was actually a link to another website.

message 210: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I came here to report the same problem.

Janice, it's not about the link itself, but using the href code, so that the link is embedded in the text and you can use one word to describe that link (I hope I manage to explain what I mean)

If you have exisiting links like that it's fine, but you can't make new ones or edit messages that contain such a link. Very annoying.

message 211: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I deleted the html code and just used links, but it looks messy, especially when you have a lot of code in a post, like it would with your thread that explains the challenge and tasks.

message 212: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Aug 23, 2021 08:02AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I see - yes, that is frustrating. It looks like it's programmed that way considering the error message you get. How is that any different than using the actual website address?

Funny, it allows it in the preview of the message but not when you try to actually post it.

I'm not sure, but I think Goodreads will "host" the image, but will not allow the link to where the images resides to have a pretty caption instead of the lengthy URL.

If I use the "img" link only and not the "href" link, I can still get there. And although not as attractive, I can just write a defining caption after the link.

(I am worried that once they figure out that we found a "work around" that "img" will be shut down as well. We are still getting to "foreign sites".)

message 214: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yikes, no more badges if img links would stop working!

message 215: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments I just ran into that problem also with 4 interactive tasks to go. So how do I work around my href link? Help for this not very tech savvy reader.

message 217: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I just posted a badge - so the img src html works, but not the a href coding.

message 218: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments @Jayme: for now I just used the regular link. GR abbreviates it but it still looks a bit messy, but I don't know how else to do it either.

message 219: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments Thanks guys. I tried using the regular link and it works, but it does look messy.

message 220: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Aug 26, 2021 08:12PM) (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments I'm going to have to work out the img code for badges. I normally use href and as you all noted it no longer works. I struggled with the omg code last time I tried it. For my recent yearly task post I just used a link to imgur. Strange that a direct link to an outside site still works.

message 221: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1506 comments Museum 40. Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington
I plan to use the artwork under link:
https://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/ob...
I am phrasing the task as "Read a book with someone wearing a bonnet on the cover or the word bonnet in title". For the first part of the task, would any one of these work?

1. The Jewelled Snuff Box Romance and intrigue in Georgian England by Alice Chetwynd Ley 2. The Plumed Bonnet (Stapleton-Downes, #6) by Mary Balogh 3. The Convenient Marriage by Georgette Heyer

I want to be sure if the covers show only bonnets and not hats. Hence the query. Thanks.

message 222: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments They all look like hats to me, Viji. Have you looked up the definition and/or google images of bonnets?

message 223: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Maybe you could make your task a bit broader than bonnets so that other hats are also included. If you specify it to girls or women it will still be different from the existing task with man wearing hat.

But maybe Janice should rule whether it's different enough :)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Peggy wrote: "Maybe you could make your task a bit broader than bonnets so that other hats are also included. If you specify it to girls or women it will still be different from the existing task with man wearin..."

Both great suggestions.

One of your books meets the word in the title requirement though.

message 225: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments If you want to go with the technical definition of bonnet, it's a hat tied under the chin. The first book is out. The second appears to be tied with a light purple bow, and the last one is a definite yes. Or, you could do as suggested and make the task broader to accommodate a woman wearing a hat.

message 226: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1506 comments Thanks a lot, Rusalka, Peggy and Janice for the suggestions and help. I have a one track mind and it never occurred to me that hats also could be added to the task for this picture.

I find that The Jewelled Snuff Box Romance and intrigue in Georgian England by Alice Chetwynd Ley could be used for 3 more challenges. I think I would rephrase the task as 'Read a book with a woman wearing a hat on the cover' and use this book merrily for 4 challenges. hahahaha!! The suggestion to broaden the task by using a woman wearing a hat is really great and specail thanks to you all.

My use of regular links just stopped working (meaning that I can't edit my messages containing said links anymore). Anybody else experiencing this?

message 228: by [deleted user] (new)

GR have now disabled the option to add outside links to comments completely. This is a real issue for many groups and especially all of us doing this challenge. Very disappointing.

Janice - what do you want us to do going forward?

message 229: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Seriously?! Definitely a case of the solution being much worse than the issue it's supposed to solve. I have never heard of forums blocking links entirely. How annoying!

message 230: by [deleted user] (new)

I’m very annoyed. GR has been incredibly lax re spam in the past. There’s no restrictions that other forums have re new members posting links. They aren’t very quick to remove spam when reported. They’ve said that if you report a spam post they will look at the member’s history and remove other spam posts and possibly the account itself but they don’t do this. There was media reports in the past re underage members taking part in sexual role-playing groups/threads but I’ve reported many spam posts around escorts and other sexually related subjects on children’s books some of which have been on there for months or even years.

Now they are doing something but it affects all members not just the spammers. Plus they aren’t properly announcing anything. The only thing I could find in the Help section was a post re links in comments posted back in mid-August. Nothing re changing everyone’s settings to receive messages from friends only and nothing re disabling the ability to add links at all.

message 231: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments All the links in the monthly challenge are still working though on my end. As obviously this made me panic as the monthly challenge is based around external links.

Can anyone who cannot access links above check this for me? Maybe it's geographically based??

I agree Lori. This is completely an overreaction and heavy handed approach to Goodreads inability to deal with this in the past. I have had to block so many escort and spam websites with profiles over the years, but this is a ridiculous way of dealing with that issue. A social media service cannot exist within a bubble.

message 232: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2100 comments Rusalka wrote: "Can anyone who cannot access links above check this for me? Maybe it's geographically based??"

I just tried it and I'm not able to post a new message containing a windowswap link to the discussion. The links that are already in the discussion do work.

message 233: by Camilla (last edited Sep 21, 2021 04:09AM) (new)

Camilla | 2100 comments I don't think they've thought it through. I don't understand how members are now able to request new books to be added, if links to e.g. the publisher's site or national libraries aren't allowed.

ROFL, even Amazon links aren't allowed! That's hilarious!

Any links already posted still work. The issue is that you can’t make a new post if you want it to have an external link. So, no one will be able to post a completion post for this month’s challenge or for the interactive tasks for this challenge and include the link to the window they saw or the painting, etc they chose.

You also can’t edit a post that has an external link without removing that link. So, members can’t edit their tracking posts without removing any external links they previously posted.

message 235: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Ahhhhh thank you both. I was fixated on old links. I have to post my book for the challenge so we have now given me a a task for the night to work this out.

FFS. This is really stupid.

message 236: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Camilla wrote: "ROFL, even Amazon links aren't allowed! That's hilarious!"

LMAO that is hilarious. Jesus they really have not thought this through.

message 237: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2100 comments I really hope they understand that they need to back out of this. So many things in GR groups are depending on outside links, as well as a large part of GR librarians' work. And probably many other things that I'm even not aware of.

message 238: by [deleted user] (new)

I’m a member of LibraryThing as well. The things I want to do are:

Catalogue books - better options on LT
Get recommendations - better on LT
Interact with other users - the group set up is better on GR
Take part in challenges - better on GR as the lack of folders in LT groups make this hard to manage especially for the Mods

So, if GR keep going the way they are they will spoil the things I want to use GR for and I won’t have a reason to be here.

message 239: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments It seems like it's already back, I'm not having any issues. Still can't rename links though.

message 240: by [deleted user] (new)

Vicki wrote: "It seems like it's already back, I'm not having any issues. Still can't rename links though."

You posted an new comment with an external link? I just tried to post with a link to Amazon UK. Still getting this message “For the safety of our members, links to other sites are not allowed in comments. Please edit your comment and try again.”

message 241: by [deleted user] (new)

It gets even better. Someone in another group has just posted this:

“Oh I despair. I tried linking to someone raising this in the goodreads help area but they have only gone and blocked their own URL.”

message 242: by Vicki (last edited Sep 21, 2021 06:05AM) (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments https://www.veranda.com/travel/g1436/...

Edit; it must be an error affecting some people, hopefully its not deliberate. Sounds like they will get enough backlash to reverse it if it is intentional

message 243: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments LOL Lori! Sorry, but that last bit is hilarious. It gives me a little bit of hope that they've been to rigorous and change it back..

message 244: by Peggy (last edited Sep 21, 2021 06:05AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodreads

Edit: seems to work, I can link to Wikipedia.

message 245: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Maybe it was just a temporary glitch in the settings?

message 246: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Sep 21, 2021 06:37AM) (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments Those links work for me. I tried linking to Amazon (just the main page) to see if retail sites work and got this error message: For the safety of our members, links to other sites are not allowed in comments. Please edit your comment and try again.

message 247: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments I get the same message for Wikipedia, so no outside links for me either.

message 248: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Could it be location-specific? US vs European members or something?

message 249: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Sep 21, 2021 07:19AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I just posted my monthly challenge report with my link to my external site window. All works, no denial or pop message to say things wouldn't work. Everything seems fine.

Has to be geographical??

message 250: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2100 comments Nope, still not working (just tried including the same Wiki link as above).
