2021 Annual Challenge - General Questions and Discussion
OMG Janice! I love this!Every year I think the challenge can't get any better and then every year it's something completely new and exciting. Thank you, again, for all the work and effort you put in these challenge.
Ugh, tonight we're having digital drinks with friends (8-10 people in total). I wasn't too excited about that in the first place (most of them I've seen recently or will see soon, I spend entire days behind my laptop doing video calls already, and it's just not the same as meeting in person, as only one person can do the talking basically). But with the challenge posted, I don't want to 'go' at all!
LOL! I know the feeling. I want to get the help threads up and then start my own gophering, but I have to work today. I also have to shovel snow today since it snowed overnight. At least we didn't get the huge amounts they were expecting.
I feel great already about 2021! This will be my first annual challenge and my goal for 2021 is simply to read several books set in countries I never read before and books set in countries I rarely read. Never thought the challenge would fit my own goal. Also, after finishing my monthly challenge book, I feel like visiting museums such as Museum of Saint-Denis (from the book). So I'm extremely excited tho I still don't know which museums shall I go first and what tasks await me!
I'm hoping 2021 is going to be a great year. It's a lovely coincidence that the challenge fits your personal goal.
I love the interactive tasks by the way! And I think it's great that you have to complete museums and can't just choose from all the tasks, that will definitely make it a bit more challenging. Also, can't believe we have 3 museums in the list. Not bad for such a small country.
I'm so excited I don't know where to start.
This is awesome Janice! But, as with every year, no matter how hard I try to convince myself not to read the next years challenge too early - I can’t not read it - and it screws with my reading plans for the remainder of the current year 😞 and then I get over myself and start gophering 📚🎉🎉🎉 Thank you for all of the hard work to keep us all entertained, and in line ❤️
What a wonderful challenge, Janice. I am a museum junky and I can't think of a better way to explore the world. :)
This looks like fun and I’m excited to give it a go. I’ve forgotten how to set up my challenge thread so that will be my first challenge lol.
As happens every year - I have two books that I still need to read to finish my 2020 challenge (completely doable), but instead of reading I'm setting up my 2021 thread and want to start gophering! I feel like there is more to do this year, since we need to research a bit and set some of our own challenge tasks, so it will take longer than usual. But, I love that part and am really excited to start checking out all the museums have to offer.
Great challenge, Janice!
this has taken a lot of work - am worried about the interactive part. I don't know how to copy and past pictures into a GR post is it Ok just to link to the site where you saw the pic?I certainly won't finish as, as you point out, finding info is very difficult but it will be fun doing what i can
Awesome challenge. I love the idea of the interactive tasks.I have on question. There are these 2 similar tasks:
Museum 14: Read a book that was published in 2000.
Museum 31: Read a book originally published in 2000.
Does this mean that Museum 14's task is based on the edition we read?

Kristie wrote: "As happens every year - I have two books that I still need to read to finish my 2020 challenge (completely doable), but instead of reading I'm setting up my 2021 thread and want to start gophering!..."I did increase the main challenge from 12 to 16 books as well. I hope that's not going to be problematic for people.
The interactive part gives you all a feel for what I do when I write the challenges.

Yes, you may link to the picture. I did put that provision into the rules. I would prefer that you narrow the picture down as much as you can. You'll need to be specific about what picture you are referencing as well because I have to have something to verify.
Try not to give me something like this: http://collection.museumlondon.ca/obj...
Rather, give me something like this:

I tried my hardest not to duplicate tasks and I see that I missed this one. Both will be originally published in 2000 and won't refer to the edition you've read.
Museums!! Love it!!I have to give lunch to my kids right now or they will bite my toes, but I will take a better look at the tasks as soon as we are finished.
I'm putting links from each museum to its help thread. But I'm not linking back to the main challenge because I'm putting the full requirements for each museum in its help thread.I'm having trouble making new threads for some reason. I keep getting an error message.
Kristie, can you set up a new thread? Every time I try to set up a new thread, I get an error message.
Janice wrote: "Kristie, can you set up a new thread? Every time I try to set up a new thread, I get an error message."I can - deleted thread
Edit: I can not use the search feature in lists right now though. I get this message "Search is temporarily unavailable. Use this time to read a book!" Which is super annoying. Actually, I don't remember the last time I was able to search lists... I know it's been down recently.
Janice wrote: "Thanks Kristie. I'm sending an email to support."Ok. :) Do you want me to create more for you to edit?
Kristie, if you have the time, could you set up threads for Museum 5 to 40, please? I'll edit them and add what I need, then delete your 1st message. It's a work around till I get a response.

Womp, womp, womp... I got a couple done, then it gave me the "please try again later" error message.
Okay. I will update the ones you've posted and then wait until I get a response from Goodreads. I'm fizzling out anyway.
isn't there a new rule that you can only create 3 threads per so many hours - I don't know the exact limits but i know other groups have struggled with the limits
I kept getting error messages earlier when I used the listopia function. It seems GR is a little bit off.
Kristie wrote: "As happens every year - I have two books that I still need to read to finish my 2020 challenge (completely doable), but instead of reading I'm setting up my 2021 thread and want to start gophering!..."I have 5 books to finish badge 4.
Peggy wrote: "I kept getting error messages earlier when I used the listopia function. It seems GR is a little bit off."Sorry to hear this, but glad it's not just me. I had to switch servers recently due to a lot of issues with GR. I was hoping this wasn't just my problem again.
Marie (UK) wrote: "isn't there a new rule that you can only create 3 threads per so many hours - I don't know the exact limits but i know other groups have struggled with the limits"Oh... this could actually be the problem. I could see them putting this limit in place to make it difficult for spammers, but it does make it difficult for mods too.
Marie (UK) wrote: "isn't there a new rule that you can only create 3 threads per so many hours - I don't know the exact limits but i know other groups have struggled with the limits"I was logged out of Goodreads, and when I logged back in, I was able to post about 3 more threads. Then I got the error message again. It could be that they've set limits. That's just annoying if they've set limits.
Esther wrote: "ok. This is fun. I just wrote my first interactive task. Museum 1 done, 39 to go..."lol! Should be done by January first then. ;)
There's a discussion about interactive tasks on the Museum 1 thread that applies to any interactive task.Esther found pictures on Instagram for the Dakar museum. That may be a good resource for pictures of the various museums' collections.
I don't seem to be able to find the main thread anymore where all the tasks are listed, just this thread and all the individual museum threads. I know it was there as I read it last night. Was just going to do some gophering and it's gone! Am I being blind and it's hiding or has it been deleted?
I saw it in the 30th place in the Year Long Main. I think the problem is it doesn't have an asterisk yet to remain in the first places, and it gets lost.
I made my first interactive task. So much fun!But once again I take my hat off to you Janice, given that you had to make 120 for this challenge, and way more than that for the 2020 one.
Do we need to create all the interactive tasks now, before the challenge starts or we can do it along the year?
