2021 Annual Challenge - General Questions and Discussion
I've finally got all the help threads finalized. Thank you all for your patience, and a special thanks to the mods for helping me create threads. It appears Goodreads has instigated a new rule that you can only create 3 new threads. Then you need to wait a period of time (an hour?) before you can do 3 more. I've been busy with work trying to meet deadlines, and the mod squad took a lot of pressure off my shoulders.
if museums are monitoring the activity on their website, I am sure they will wonder what was special about this week. :)
Janice, as you know Dom and I do our challenges together. For the interactive challenges it says we cannot copy someone else’s task. So, if we see an exhibit with a blue and white striped background, she would say her task is ‘blue and white stripes on cover’ and I could say the task is ‘blue and white cover’ and we could read the same book?
Jannene wrote: "Janice, as you know Dom and I do our challenges together. For the interactive challenges it says we cannot copy someone else’s task. So, if we see an exhibit with a blue and white striped backgroun..."Sneaky! But it works. :)
Peggy wrote: "I love the interactive tasks by the way! And I think it's great that you have to complete museums and can't just choose from all the tasks, that will definitely make it a bit more challenging.I thought that was clever too!!!! It's a neat twist :)
Thanks once again Janice for a well-thought-out challenge to motivate us to read more widely, and in the process, “visit” museums around the world.
Janice, for the interactive task of museum 2 I found an item I'd like to use. However, I can find it only on one website, and that website prohibits copying of images, so I can only link to the website itself and not the specific image. Is it acceptable if I use this link (https://www.go2peru.com/peru_guide/ch...), and explain that it's about 'the collar with 10 heads of felines which is the last picture, bottom right on the page'? Alternatively I could make a print-screen of the website with a focus on this item, upload it somewhere, and then link to it.
Rusalka wrote: "I'd use the Snipping Tool, or print screen - paste to paint or whatever - upload to imgur."That's what I'm doing too. I just screenshot that one item, save it to my desktop, then imgur. You can delete the screenshot later.
https://www.go2peru.com/peru_guide/ch...Peggy when I clicked on the picture to make it bigger I got the above link that focuses on the picture so that should work.

You could also do a print screen and crop out the background before uploading it to Imgur.

That would work even better especially for people unable to use a photo hosting site.

Oh thanks! I tried it and it didn't work, but when I use your link it works. Good :)

Janice wrote: "Jannene wrote: "Janice, as you know Dom and I do our challenges together. For the interactive challenges it says we cannot copy someone else’s task. So, if we see an exhibit with a blue and white s..."Thanks Janice, by the way l'm innocent it was her idea!
Hi, I'm new and a little confused, do I sign up somewhere or create my own thread to track books? Thank you :)
Just to add to what Jenn said, there are instructions on how to set up your own thread in the challenge rules. Welcome Nicole. :)
Sorry Janice 😞 I was suddenly very concerned that everyone might have already gone to bed, and poor Nicole would be left not being able to join in all of the fun until today 😂 I know “everybody gone to bed” who am I kidding, somebody would have been up reading lol

I didn't take offense. I was simply adding to your response in anticipation of what the next question could be. :)
I read till probably 1:00 this morning.
And remember I live in the future and do the night shift ;)But thanks Jenn, it's great when members help out other members. It's a conversation with everyone, not just us mods!
Hi, there! I need some help. I really want to do this challenge but I am struggling to set up my feed. I “clicked here” and put my WoF name and Sharon’s Super Tour in the topics box. I did not see a default folder to accept and I don’t know what to put in the comment section. I get two messages: update my email but I see no place to do that and I have to be a member of the group. Please advise. Thank you! 😩
Sharon, I am not sure I completely understand what the problem is, but for creating your own thread do the following:-Go to https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
-Click in the "new topic" link (in green on the upper right corner, above "last activity")
-In "topic" write "Sharon’s Super Tour"
-Leave the folder as it is. It is supposed to stay in "Challenges - Year Long Main"
-In "comment" write anything. It has to be a first comment for the thread to be created, so you can just write "Reserved" if you want.
-Click "post"
The thread will be created. Then you can edit your first comment if you want, and keep posting as you plan your yearly challenge.
Is this helpful?
The Wall of Fame is a different thing. I will explain in another comment.
For getting a Wall of Fame (if you still don't have onw) go to https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and ask for one. Choose the name you want for your wall, and the mods will create it when you win your first badge.
Thank you, Sandra. I am still trying. Once I hit post, it says I need to verify my email, but gives me no place to do that. And I get messages from goodreads so I am not sure what that is about either. Sigh. I am trying to do this on an IPAD and am not sure if that is the problem or not. But, thank you for reaching out.
I don't know if the iPad is the problem but I do know that GR acts weird from time to time. It might be just the website, not you.
Sandra wrote: "I don't know if the iPad is the problem but I do know that GR acts weird from time to time. It might be just the website, not you."She got it, Sandra. Thanks for helping.
Before I forget (again), I wanna ask. If I read books from my museum list but not aiming for, lets say, badge 1, do I need to report it the moment I finished it, or just wait till the time comes?
You report it as you finish it Aya, just make clear for which badge it is. And I think that even then you can change it later (so if you first state it's for badge 2, but later you want to make it badge 3). Just don't save them all up ;-)
For 2021, after Badge 1 & 2 were done, I had everyone reporting everything as Badge 3 and then when Badge 3 was done, moving leftovers to Badge 4. I think this year, you can identify what badges you want each museum to fall under and then make changes if you want to. I'm not which is less work in the long run. But yes, report as you finish. One of my first books that I'll be reporting will be a badge 2. I need to read it so I can read the badge 1 book.
Another basic operating question here...How do I get a picture of an art piece to show up in my thread?
Sharon wrote: "Another basic operating question here...How do I get a picture of an art piece to show up in my thread?"
Some people are just copying the link to the piece. If you want the actual picture, I am taking a screenshot of it, then using https://imgur.com to get the html code, and you can paste that code into your comment box.
You can also right click the picture, copy the image address, and put that into the html code. It saves some steps and you don't need an account for imgur or something similar. The only risk if is the link disappears (not sure if that would happen, maybe it could with temporary exhibitions?) you might lose your picture too.

Ayacchi wrote: "Thanks, Peggy and Janice! Didn't recognize you at first with your new profile picture"Janice changes her picture every year to coordinate with the yearly challenge. :) You'll get used to the new one soon.
The year we did movie mania, I channeled Marilyn Monroe. This year it was question marks for trivia. And for 2021, I'll be Mona Lisa. I hope we all have her smile in the new year.
Janice wrote: "The year we did movie mania, I channeled Marilyn Monroe. This year it was question marks for trivia. And for 2021, I'll be Mona Lisa. I hope we all have her smile in the new year."I'm hoping more for this type of smile year:
Just double checking that there is no restriction on using books that have Children's as main page genre, as long as they are over the minimum page count? I couldn't find anything about it in the rules and some groups are very strict about this. Specifically, I was thinking of using The Lost Hero for museum #7, series with 5 primary works. The HC is 553 pages, so there is no problem with the length, and it's not manga etc.

It's a lot of work so you can do them throughout the year. I would recommend that you write your task and then look for a book to fill it, rather than read a book and try to make up a task for it. I think the later would be a little more difficult.
And yes, you may change your tasks after you've published them.
