Bill (Just a) | 911 comments Alas, my IPhone 5s has come to an end as of December 31st. That means iTunes no longer works for me as I move to an Android phone. MediaMonkey will house my music.

What should I use to listen to Audiobooks? Not all my books come from audible. Is Smart AudioBook Player the go to player now for audiobooks on the android phone. I seem to recall that from prior discussions.

Thoughts and suggestions?

Kandice | 62 comments Do you use Libby or Overdrive? Their audible apps are terrific and free.

I also love Chirp. The app is free and the audiobooks are deeply discounted. You have to look under limited time offers, but they are as little as $0.99.

I have not used those. I am always confused over what is for obtaining an audiobook and what is for just playing what you already have. I am looking to just play DRM free audio books that I already have.

John | 3925 comments I have had Smart Audiobook for quite a while, finding it terrific. However... perhaps once a year or so I find it necessary to delete the app and reinstall; I use MP3 Tag in conjunction with it as well.

Julesy | 96 comments I have been using Smart Audiobook Player for years. Love it! It has so many different options for speed, volume, etc. I use it for audiobooks I get from Overdrive or ripped CDs from the libraries. Unlike John, I have never had any issues with it.

Do I need MP3 Tag? Just loaded Smart Audiobook and looks like it is running OK.

John | 3925 comments I use mp3 tag to fine tune stuff, so you're likely fine.

Bill (Just a) | 911 comments Thanks, John.

Bill (Just a) | 911 comments I started using MP3 tag as well. When I transfer a book to my phone, I have maintained the same file structure as Itues. It looks like this "Audiobooks>Scott McCormick>Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World.mp3".

Notice the subfolder is the author's name and inside is the MP3. There is no subfolder with the folder displaying the authors name. What if I have two books by the same author. Can I use subfolders?

John | 3925 comments If I understand you correctly, yes.

Bill (Just a) | 911 comments Thanks. I will try that next time.

Adam (adamgreenberg) | 1 comments Been using Podcast Addict for years. Personally, I think it's the best. (And it allows you to speed anything up to 5x where many others stop at 2x.)

Brad Audiobibliophile (trollslayer1) | 89 comments I used Smart Audiobook Player for a fair while and liked it but then switched to Listen Audiobook Player which is similar but I prefer it. similar functions but a nicer layout and a few options that Smart doesn't have, or didn't when I switched.

I recently tried Sirin which has some useful features like sorting your books into folders of Series as well as authors but it only works if your metadata is 100% spot on. Any slight deviation in the metadata throws up all kinds of filing issues with series books in the wrong order or listed outside of the series folder so I decided to stick with Listen. When you download books from different sources like Libby, Borrowbox, Audible, Google books, NetGalley etc the metadata is always different so it's more work to get the data right. I'd rather be listening than fiddling with metadata.

Libby is great; I recently added another library app called "Hoopla." Each seems to have advantages and disadvantages. (e.g. Hoopla gives you access to Great Courses and you don't have to wait for a book to be returned.)

Libby: https://play.google.com/store/apps/de...
Hoopla: https://play.google.com/store/apps/de...

message 15: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 62 comments I also use Hoopla, but primarily for comics.

message 16: by Julesy (new)

Julesy | 96 comments I have been using the hoopla app for a couple of years now. Most of my libraries have gotten rid of Overdrive and moved their audio offerings over to hoopla. The interface has vastly improved since its inception. The hoopla app used to constantly lose my bookmarking place and I would be so frustrated because I never glanced to see where I was in the audio, spending too much time finding the correct place to start back again. Now it doesn't lose my bookmark anymore. It could be that I'm retired now and using wifi vs. mobile while listening.

I still use Smart Audiobook Player for whatever audios I can get from Overdrive. To me, this free android app has always been perfect for my needs so I don't even bother to look for something different.

My library used to have Overdrive, then they replaced it with Libby (which is also BY overdrive.) And recently they added Hoopla. Nice to have options.

Yes, very true, nice to have options. Unfortunately, with Libby, I cannot save the audiobooks on a flash drive to listen to later, like I was able to do with Overdrive after downloading on my computer with the OD software. By saving on a flash drive, I could listen to the audiobook at my leisure without feeling pressured to finish it before it expired. Not a concern for hoopla since the content is always available.
