The title is from him imagining himself as making a job of saving children running through a field of rye by catching them before they fell off a nearby cliff (a "catcher in the rye"). What, did this tell you about Holden? Is he a good guy?

He is a good guy who is himself falling off a cliff and has also lost a brother to the cliff of illness. Not being able to save his brother and not knowing how to save himself he finds solace in the fantasy of saving others who are innocent in the same way Allie was.
