I think it was a combination of both. Tim and Chelsea may have been having problems, but he certainly didn't want anything to happen to her. He wanted Sharp Investigation to find Chelsea. With two small children, he couldn't afford to get thrown in jail.
I agree, Robin. While he needed to save his own skin, he seemed to want to find Chelsea just as much. After all, he didn’t ask Sharp Investigations to clear him, just find Chelsea because he didn’t think the Sheriff was trying that hard.
Tim priority was obviously to find his wife. I don't believe he was thinking of himself at all in this situation.
