Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I am looking forward to see what the mods come up with. I like planning, but I don't follow plan ...

message 4: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12645 comments I veer off the road planned road too

-and I like your PP headpiece-LoL at first I was wonder "what the heck is she wearing"

message 5: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments It's my visor I wear at work, it has a big ole foam thingy :D I think I look (sort of) like an astronaut, so I've renamed my job title 'biblionaut' (librarian in Danish is biblitekar). And put Major Tom on the name tag on the head gear in reference to the David Bowie song Space Oddity. Yeah, sometimes you only have the fun you make yourself ;)

Theresa | 15664 comments I am not at all anxious to see or consider new challenges. Partly because Poll Tally just ended and partly because I am so busy with work I just want to relax with my reading and catch up on neglected challenges from this year. Which are legion.

But I'm also not a planner. I have a massive owned TBR - print and ebook. And they are extremely eclectic. I have no trouble just plucking books off the towers to read and figuring out what prompts or themes they fit. Far too much of my life and work are planned and scheduled. Reading is absolutely NOT! Mostly.

Popsugar is not announcing it's 2021 challenge until December 1. Just in case someone else besides me likes that one.

LOL! Nice!

message 12: by Meli (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments This year was kind of a dud in terms of challenges for me, not because they were bad but they just didn't fit with my personal goals or were too much for me to handle with all my book clubs etc, so yes, I am looking forward to a new year of challenges :)

message 13: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9250 comments I can wait until the vote comes up in September as I am resting from challenges now. That said, I have 3 more books for the PopSugar challenge I opted to do this year. I don't know if I'll do that next year as I only do that one once in a while.

message 14: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 688 comments I also anxiously await challenge voting at the end of each year - just like I compulsively check the BINGO years the morning of the first and fifteenth of every month! LOL I love planning and I love new starts, so the end and beginning of every year is always very exciting to me! Right there with you Joni :)

message 15: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9299 comments We are working on these for the vote! I'm excited to see what our members decide for next year.

message 16: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I’m excited for 2021 for lots of reasons. I’m hoping mostly that the pandemic will die sometime next year, the earlier the better.

I do look forward to new challenges too. But, the last couple of years, I haven’t really been into challenges. I don’t know if I will be into one next year either. My depression is still so up and down right now that I have a hard time preparing for anything. But I still like to see what’s coming.

Jenni,

As BC so correctly says, we value you being here whether or not you partake of the challenges! So NO PRESSURE. I'm sorry about your depression, and I hope you feel better sooner rather than later . . .but again, please feel free to hang out and just enjoy whatever it is you like most at PBT.

So glad you found some worthwhile reads through our membership. We have some extremely well read members. (Sadly, I'm not really one of them, lol).

Oh the gems I have read...or even reread like the Rebecca buddy read this month ... because of this group!

Yes, that is why I love this group. This group is the best. I love it as much as I love my IRL book club.

message 23: by Joy D (last edited Nov 15, 2020 12:14PM) (new)

Joy D | 10191 comments I am looking forward to seeing the options for our new challenges. I particularly enjoyed our Poll Tally challenge this year. I had never participated in a team challenge before. It was loads of fun!

I love the planning phase. I generally only plan for part of my year in reading so I also have plenty of flexibility.

Mods deserve some time off too! It looks like you are still doing "recount" - that is, clarifying any tags you can't find - from this year.

I don't do the challenges here every year, either. I took 2019 off. I don't like to do ones where I have to make a shelf and get random picks because I might not be in the mood to read a book then or something. I broke my mood reading attitude for this last game, but may go back to that.

message 28: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments This year I only did bingo.

message 29: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10191 comments Bingo was a bit of a disappointment for me - not many of my numbers were called so it was a very long stretch between reading books for the challenge.

Totally agree. No pressure here :-)

message 31: by NancyJ (last edited Nov 16, 2020 10:54PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11115 comments I got way too involved (and stressed out) with poll ballot this year, so I need to go very easy on challenges next year. I have some reading priorities of my own for 2021, but I'll try to find books that meet multiple goals.

I loved that the challenges weren't tied to a specific month this year. The 2019 challenges would have been impossible for some of us in 2020, with the library closings. (Did they have a crystal ball to know something strange was coming?) I think we'll need the extra lead time and flexibility in 2021 too. I look forward to seeing what they come up with to challenge us.

Well that turned out to be a great decision for you! Didn't you already get two bingos?

message 33: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Yes :) I still have to finish a book for it to be official. I also did a challenge in another group, but I thought poll ballot looked a bit too consuming, and I think that was the right decision for me.

Same here. I was going to not get too involved and just read for fun. And then I tried to compete with two heavy readers where one is retired and the other is single. In the midst of that we had a bunch of stuff come up in June so that I had almost no reading time for while, etc.

That said, I had a lot of fun with Jade Dragons!!!

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2601 comments This poll ballot really had me reading more than any other challenge. I look forward to seeing what comes up next. I loved working with my team - Jade Dragons! However, I had little luck getting my numbers drawn with Bingo and finally just let it ride.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11115 comments Joy D wrote: "Bingo was a bit of a disappointment for me - not many of my numbers were called so it was a very long stretch between reading books for the challenge."

Joy, I have a feeling that the Bingo Fairy (who can fly so high, she doesn't have to worry about travel restrictions) will scatter a few extra bingo numbers for Thanksgiving and other holidays. She knows that we all need a distraction from all the people, family gatherings, parties, trips, and events we are missing this year.

message 38: by Kimber (new)

Kimber (kimberwolf) | 845 comments I'm always very curious about what sorts of challenges will be presented to be voted on. One of my favorite things after the challenges are determined is sorting through all of the reading possibilities and choosing the books I plan to read. I don't always read according to plan, but I don't beat myself up for that either. I just like that planning stage!

I enjoyed the Poll Ballot Tally challenge. The level of excitement, humor, and dedication of my Jade Dragon teammates was off the charts! I am by nature not a super-competitive person and more of a tortoise than a hare when it comes to races of any sort, but I felt satisfied with my contribution to the team, if a little out of the loop at times because I would have waves of busy-ness at work and not be able to check in as often as I would have liked.

I've also been enjoying the bingo game. I'm one away from a BINGO on my card in two different spots, but I haven't been keeping up on the reading, so I need to get on that in case one of my missing numbers is called.

Speaking of the love of planning, when the last bingo number was called, I thoroughly enjoyed looking up the books published that year, making note of a couple of them, checking my shelves to find them, and pulling one and setting it on my TBR pile. Then I realized I hadn't checked to see if I had that year on my bingo card -- I didn't! But I wasn't even sorry, because I enjoy that process, and I may even go ahead and read that book anyway (it was Virgin in the Garden by A.S. Byatt, in case anyone is curious.)

I look forward to seeing what potential challenges the PBT mods come up with for the coming year. It's always fun.

Oh, that made me laugh! Been there, done that. I put together a "scavenger hunt" challenge in another group where I am the moderator. Participants have to find the word(s) or phrase(s) in the text of the book they are reading, and cite the quote. Anyway ...one time the target word was "yurt" .... I listen to lots of audio books and got all excited when I heard "yurt" ... searched for a piece of paper so I could jot it down... Then I realized I was listening to the television in the background and I had heard the word used in a commercial.... S*I*G*H

I will look forward to seeing what the Bingo Fairy brings, :-)
I have to admit that these challenges are appealing to many people. For some, having the books scattered is probably more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

message 41: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments I've found out these challenges with monthly planning, and things revealed in bits frequently, suit my reading style (personality?) a lot better than yearly challenges where everything is revealed at once, and you have to keep up the enthusiasm for a whole year.
