slauderdale | 182 comments What it says on the tin. This is very definitely characters named Christian and not Christine, Christopher, Christina, etc. I'm most interested in books for children as that is what I have been asked for, but I going to go ahead and start a Character Names Book List (https://www.goodreads.com/list/tag/ch...) for "Characters named Christian" for books across all age groups, because I think it would be useful, and because this one is a little more challenging to research due to the preponderant use of Christian in its adjectival sense.

Moloch | 342 comments I'll go with the obvious suggestion: the Fifty Shades series by E.L. James

edit: "all age groups": meaning you need suggestions for adult books also? If you're looking for books for children/teens, then 50 shades is not very useful! :-D

I knew it would come up, though, and I don't mind. I figure, once I've got a good lengthy list together, people can go through it to find what they want.

slauderdale | 182 comments "Christian, the Hugging Lion" and "Christian the Lion: Based on the best-selling true story!" (American version of "Christian the Lion: My Story of How I Learned to Be Wild") have already proved helpful to the person who originally asked me about this. Thanks a bunch! I'm still going to make that list, though, in case anyone else comes up with anything. I have a few additional that I have nabbed from the Wikipedia article "Christian (given name)" --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christi...

Pilgrim's Progress (John Bunyan)
Cyrano de Bergerac (Edmond Rostand) (yes, I know it's a play)
Black Maria (Diana Wynne Jones; possibly, anyway - supporting character)

slauderdale | 182 comments And is The Runaway's Gold a mistake (main character Christopher, author Christie) or is there someone named Christian in it? [looks again]

message 9: by slauderdale (new)

slauderdale | 182 comments What is the nature of the search or searches that you ran? Particular string in Google or library catalog or other web site? How did you find these in and around books using "Christian" other than as a given name?

message 10: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28749 comments I was mainly searching Google and Worldcat and other library catalogs. I tried "year old Christian" and "named Christian" and just plain "Christian" as search strings. Limiting to juvenile fic, and it turned up a wide variety of results.

By the way, I think you can scratch The Runaway's Gold. Library catalog said "The protagonist of this historical novel, which is set in the Shetland Islands and also New York City around 1840, is Christian Robertson." But Goodreads definitely says Christopher, so maybe the character underwent a name change prior to publication.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5388 comments Goddammit, Once Upon a Marigold is what immediately sprang to mind.
There’s also Twice Upon a Marigold.

message 12: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28749 comments Thrice Upon a Marigold, too. It looks like Christian appears in all three books.

Deal Breaker is for adults. The first in a series.

message 15: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lynnbar) | 126 comments Mutiny on the Bounty - based on a true story - has a character called Fletcher Christian.

message 16: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Love | 1513 comments I don't know how to find a link to this without scrolling through 100 pages, but a character who is deceased and yet often referred to in Margot Benary-Isbert's YA novel The Ark is named Christian.

There is also a filk (SF) song called "Dawson's Christian" by Duane Elms. The "Christian" is a spaceship. http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/songs/daw...

message 17: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28749 comments The Ark for Pamela's suggestion and Mutiny on the Bounty for Lynn's suggestion.

The Silent Patient is for adults.

slauderdale | 182 comments I helped the person who I originally created this topic to help, but I never pursued my secondary goal of making a list for books with characters named Christian, so I'm finally doing that. I'm interested in doing similar with other character names, if that isn't terribly redundant. I really haven't created lists before or gotten into it as an ongoing pursuit, so I don't want to run afoul of Goodreads etiquette. Is
https://www.goodreads.com/list/tag/ch...
a fair reflection of what is out there? Because you'd think there would be more name-themed lists. And it seems to happen in an organic way in that, for example, when I Googled characters named sarah goodreads I get a list:
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
but that seems to have generated by whether the books happen to be shelved that way by someone (Shelves > Characters Named Sarah) and not because a List has been created as such. Am I right? Or is there a created list out there for characters named Sarah? Or characters named Sara?

Emily | 295 comments I searched in the list search area. Here are the two I saw about Sara/Sarah:

slauderdale | 182 comments I wonder why that didn't pop up when I looked. Probably it's because I wasn't looking as thoroughly as I should have, or would the quote marks or use of backslash have thrown things off. But you found it, so I'm inclined to think I just wasn't being thorough.

message 22: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28749 comments Another way you can search is by tags.

For example, name, names, and naming.

You can also search just with keywords, since some lists don't have tags. I would try the specific name to see what comes up.

https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8...

For example, these are the 27 lists that popped up when I searched for "Lily."

message 23: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28749 comments Searching for "leading lady named" also brings up 138 lists.
