I personally like Maxon a lot more, because Aspen got in the way of things between them. I wanted to chuck the book across the room.

the great debate/debacle
aspen: loyal, hardworking, kind
he's a great character, with real insecurities and merits. however, he seems like the person who likes to protect, and is passionate yet likes stagnancy.
this to me, is not a good fit for America. moreover, after he broke things off, and America was starting to like maxon, he randomly popped up and assumed that after a kiss things were all back to normal. he is more rash and cares less about effects of his actions (in most respects) and that is too similar to America, and i think the two of them together romantically would cause dysfunction. i think he and America have a special platonic bond though<3
on the other hand,
maxon: understanding, loving
maxon is forgiving and understanding of america's rash actions, and helps her understand the ramifications of her actions in turn. their personalities blend together well, and they both deeply care for each other. she has a lot of spirit and he is more laid-back, which is a great combination. GET ME A MAXON. OR AN ASPEN.

Maxon of course. He is so sweet to America and still loves her even after he thinks she cheated on him with Aspan.
Definitely Maxon. I have a deep and complicated hatred for Aspen.
well, I really liked aspen at the beginning (obvi I didn't know too much about Maxon). But Maxon was obvi very charming and sweet but I aspen still had my loyalties. However, I feel like the author trashed aspen's character really quickly so that America wouldn't feel bad about choosing Maxon.
Although I loved both, given their personalities and America's personality, Maxon was more suited for America, but I feel like had Aspen not left America, America would have been just as happy with Aspen. Aspen is highly selfless - something I feel like America truly loved about him- and although he finds love with Lucy, Aspen's change caused America to find a better love suited for her. So, I don't think one is better than the other, I think based on America's needs, Maxon's love was better, but Aspen and Maxon are both amazing men.
Bro, it's obviously Maxon.
I mean Maxon is just a cut above all rest of characters (except maybe Marlee). Don't get me wrong, but I low-key feel like Cass legit wants to showcase America as very clever, very polite, very unselfish, very good-natured when she's clearly NOT. And Aspen is just way too much toxicity to handle with.
So, yeah, Maxon.

Obviously I like Maxon better for America because they are endgame, but while reading the first book and halfway into the second book I was cheering Aspen on! After the second book he got kind of pushy, and it seemed like he saw no other options? I got annoyed with him after a while, which is why Maxon is better!
Maxon all the way! He treats her so well! Aspen trys really hard, but he is in the army now so he wouldn't really be able to help care for a family. Al the way for Maxon!!!
At the beginning I was #teamaspen but after he came to the castle, idk I just lost the love I had for him. Now I am 100% #teammaxon, like is this even a competition?
I thought I would like Aspen better when I first started the book, but as time went on I realized that Maxon was the better choice. Maxon would've done whatever he could for America, and to be honest America took it for granted.
maxon aunque a veces me hacia dudar, siento que aspen estaba desesperado y si amas a alguien enserio no te importa nada exterior a vuestra relación ni los comentarios de los otros nada
I love both characters, but honestly, I prefer aspen. I have been looking through the rest of the replies and everyone has talked about how Maxon is better for America even though the question is about who is better overall. I agree, Maxon is perfect for America because of how he deals with her personality so well without becoming frustrated with her. however, Aspen and America have so so much chemistry and they were both so in love. They always had so much tension between them and I loved that. Maxon on the other hand is just so loveable and perfect for America.
Personally, I'm on Team Aspen. He knows America a lot better and she loved him from the start. I have only read the first 2 books, so I might change my mind after "The One."
I like Aspen so much in the beginning with America, they just seemed to fit. However as the series moves forward I start to love America's relationship with Maxon more. Aspen shouldn't have broken up with her.
SPOILER
Maxon for sureee, Aspen did things that just didn't make sense at all.
He told Mer to sign up for The Selection but got mad at her when she "Won".
He also saw how much more difficult it would be if he came to the palace, he still did.
He also NEVER asked her if everything was okay, he just kissed her.
In some moments that's a nice thing but I don't think that was the right time, I don't like him at all.
I also think Lucy did deserve better.
I know this all sounds really harsh but it's what I thought about him.

OMG! This is tough! I love them both!! My personal option is Maxon. They are well suited for each other. At first i was fully #teamaspen, but towards the ending, i was fully #teamMaxon. Maxon was always there for her when she needed him. He showed her love and respect! She was able to have something with Maxon that she was never able to have with Aspen. America and aspen might say they love each other, but they didn’t exactly sound like it. As for mason, yo could definitely tell he loved her! Team Maxon all the way!!!
MAXON ALL THE WAY!! I love him so much! <3 He is my Hottie!! (I guess he's Mer's hottie, but i'll just steal him ;))
Maxon, 100%. Aspen continued to force himself into America's life even though he could see how perfectly happy he could be without him, and he was after all the one that made her sign up in the first place. At first I thought Aspen was sweet, but by the end of the 2nd book I thought he was too possessive. But that's just what I think.
Honestly, I thought both of them were really bland.
There were times when I couldn't tell who was in which scene with America because they both were so similar and void of personality. Maxon is funny or charming supposedly, and Aspen is supportive and prideful. I think that's where their personalities begin and end.
I did prefer Aspen, however because he was the one America turned to when she had no one. Maxon was off with the other girls (which I deeply disliked) and all of the Selected were very competitive with each other so America felt alone. But Aspen didn't abandon her. He was loyal and stayed with her even though he knew she couldn't be in a relationship with him.
Maxon really played with America's feelings by always changing up his tune and being like, "America, I love you. You're the one I'm going to pick" to literally going out with another girl and then whispering the same stuff to her. And while I didn't like how Aspen's pride got wounded because American tried to help him, I appreciated when he came to terms with his stupidity and apologized. I genuinely believe that he wanted her to live a better life than he could provide. And while part of me agrees that it was kind of dumb for him to break up with her, I wonder where else could their relationship have gone? Because if America was dating Aspen while she was in the Selection, they couldn't be together anyway. So what would be the point?
Anyway, I just don't think I like Maxon very much. He sweet-talked a bunch of girls at once and then made out with Celeste but then he got all angry at America for.... standing too close to Aspen? and touching his chest? And he doesn't even let her explain, even though America let Maxon explain after the whole Celeste incident. Which was just pure cheating, unlike what America was doing. Her only crime was sneaking out to meet Aspen. They just talked, it was clear that nothing romantic was going on. Nothing romantic had been going on for quite a while, actually.
So yeah. Aspen really understands America's frustration behind the caste systems and he supports her when she feels alone. He's loyal and basically would follow her to the ends of the earth. They have a cute dynamic and her family loves him. Maxon is literally out kissing other girls and misleading America. He literally didn't even care about the caste system until America showed up and was like "yeah, this is what's happening to your people" and Maxon was like "gotta keep the pretty girl happy." I understand that he's not a bad person and that he's just really privileged but I don't really sympathize with that crap. Maxon really just seemed more like a prize to me, something that seems perfect but is actually just being held together by a single thread. Aspen was realer and I understood his bitterness and desire to protect America.
But in the end, I really didn't care who she ended up with.

I'm so into Maxon, like, it's unfair to compare cause Maxon is a whole new level. Also we had the opportunity to know Maxon more than Aspen, due to the entire book.
In general, Aspen feels boring to me while Maxon has my entire heart and soul.

Maxonnnnnnnnn I feel like Aspen just gave up when things got tough but Maxon is dedicated.
I think what makes this love triangle so good is that there isn't one clear answer. Either one would have been good. America could have chosen either one, and she would have had a beautiful life and a great, loving marriage. They're both great guys and would have been good for her in different ways.
Those are the kind of love triangles I like to read (and write). Although if you're asking for my personal preference, I was definitely team Maxon. Although the first time I read the series, he irritated me at times. But so did America. Which, again, isn't a bad thing. I like when characters have flaws.

Maxon ALL THE WAY!!! I never liked Aspen, not that he was a bad person or did something wrong, I just loved Maxon too much.
Team Maxon!!
Okay so here are some of my thoughts: Aspen wanted a better life for America that he felt he couldn't provide but if the love they had for each other really meant something, they would have figured it out. Why did he give up so easily especially after two years of being together? Why did he give up so easily when America wasn't bothered by it and WANTED to go through the ups and downs of life with him? He lost his chance.
America is better off with Maxon. He's nurturing, kind, genuine, and they complement each other. He loved her for who she was. They both taught each other so much and have allowed each other to see a different perspective/world view (since they both came from two different upbringings). They have helped each other and always could fall back on the bond that they had. Their relationship was special and together they would benefit the country better than anyone else. (I have only read the first book so far). Maxon loves America for who she really is despite everything, and America loves Maxon for who he is despite everything.

I'm kinda 50/50 but at the beginning of the book I have to say, Aspen, although Maxon did grow on me so by the end of the book I would say Maxon just because it seems like he and America are meant to be even if they make a TON of mistakes along the way and their world is messed up.
honestly i am 100% maxon for one huge reason... Aspen abandoned her at her worst, and came crawling back when she was at her best bc he thought it would bring him up, but Maxon loved her at her worst and was willing to pull himself down to raise her up.
MAXON! If Aspen wasn't a coward and broke up with America, I'd say Aspen. But if he TRULY loved her, he would've fought harder and never left her.
Maxon. I mean, I think he loves her another way than Aspen. He hasn’t give up on her in spite of her saying, that she don’t know what she wants and that she done want the crown.
MAXON
aspen is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying. every single time aspen shows up he just creates more confusion within America and creates more problems and when Maxon finds out in the end of The One i wanted to throw the book across the room. Maxon is so much better for America. Maxon literally sacrifices everything for her, and even when they argue, even when America thinks she can't go on with him they always find their way back to each other.

Maxon for sure. I hate Aspen for breaking up with her like that and then showing up at her new home expecting her to love him when she's there to love Maxon. Maxon was sweet and funny and overall such a lovely guy.
Maxon! A hundred tiles Maxon! Sure he made mistakes and so did Aspen, but he wins without a doubt. He truly loved and cared for America in a way that Aspen never did and ever could.
Definitely Maxon! Aspen throughout the series has been gaslighting America into thinking that she is meant to love him and be with him. He pushes this romance between them *spoiler* even after seeing the caning of poor Marlee.
Although I don’t really have anything against Aspen, Maxon is the better choice. Maxon would literally do anything for America and while Aspen might also, he gave up on her and their relationship wayyyy to easily. Wasn’t their love strong? Personally, I think Aspen and America just had a passion. Maxon and America had such a strong love that fit and molded perfectly. Some people say that Maxon would play America but the point of the selection was for Maxon to get to know every girl. America was “confused on her feelings” throughout most of the books, Maxon had to find a wife no matter what so he had to have other people in case America backed down. Maxon was such a sweetheart that treated America right, I think Aspen was just a temporary passion and Maxon was her true love. I don’t think Aspen is a bad character but things between him and America felt forced and kind of weird. I was team Maxon since the beginning although Aspen wasn’t bad
