King Lear (William Shakespeare). I consider this story legendary simply because Lyr or Ler was a shadowy figure in English history before Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote a coherent story of the king and his daughters in his Historia Regum Britanniae (@1137). The story was drawn from Celtic tradition and early British history. Plus of course, Shakespeare's own design as well.
