If I were younger or if I didn't have family here, I would seriously think about moving to another country. Even if the presidency comes through, it is so painful to see how many people support cruelty and selfishness.
I'm glad Michigan has gone to Biden but some of the news from Detroit of people trying to push their way into the counting center is disturbing. There are over 100 republicans,100 democrats and 100 nonpartisans in there watching the count and making challenges as it is. Thanks Joi for reminding us of some of the good news. This isn't over yet but I'm praying for good news come morning.Meanwhile Michigan reported over 4,000 new covid cases today which is scary. Appointment about the pacemaker for my fiance is Friday and if he does need one we're both going to push to get it done as soon as possible.

All we need is Nevada. I found the best coping mechanism to survive the most critical election of my lifetime: overwork. I have had 2 nonstop days going from early to late. Meant a complete news, social media and private emails blackout until late each evening. By then, after 2 minutes my brain just could not make sense of what it was hearing and seeing. Thus, Hallmark Christmas Movies was the optimal diversion!Like so many, I am completely disheartened on what this election confirms: half the country supports a man who is literally stealing their lives from them - in every sense of the word 'lives'. It is like there is a mass Stockholm Syndrome at work.
These last few days, I keep thinking we are witnessing another Civil War, 21st Century style. But that doesn't explain how this same thing is also playing out all over the globe - Brexit in UK, challenge to Merkle in Germany at last election, Canada, France, Australia - either in the leader or parliament/Senate or both. I just don't see how you really improve your lot by relocating to another country, as a friend did in last couple of months. Unless by just being a resident in another country and not a citizen, you don't have a vested interest in the politics there, are not sufficiently connected. And for most, income and investments and work still are connected to the US.
But then, I also live and work in the heart liberal Democratic blue Manhattan.
Apparently half the country looked around and said, "I want 4 more years of this!" Everything Biden proposes will be blocked in the Senate, then they will blame him for not doing more. Still I am feeling better than last night.
Thank you to Michigan and Wisconsin for helping us pull this out. Yesterday was a rough day, even and maybe especially for the Queen of Faith. Read an extraordinary book at just the right time. If history has taught us anything, it's that we need to learn, and connect, and be inspired by one another. I'm grateful to this group of extraordinary people for supporting each other through life's celebrations and challenges, large and small, and for being a collective. A source of friendship, resilience, and hope.

The outlook looks brighter. When I saw PA moving to Biden I breathed a little easier...I have a BFF in Bucks county (originally from Michigan) we were sending that white light Amy always talks about across the miles to each other. Seems to be working.The worst is yet to come, I fear. Now that Orange Man has built his wall around the White House, will he barricade himself in there?
Although Michigan as a whole came through, my area went Trump 58-42-it disgusts me. Also it looks like our State House will go Red, the State Senate, still unsettled.
Like everyone else here feeling very anxious and jittery. How has our country ended up where we are? I've been trying to stay busy and not be obsessive about watching results. It's not working! I'm with all of you saying this is now beyond politics and about the morality of our country. There is just nothing good about the orange man. He's just a terrible human being. Worried about our country in these times.

Ultimately to change on a national level, you have to start on the local level. And I mean the village, town, and county level. Then the States. Then the federal. Every gain made leads to an eventual gain at the next level. It is slow, but it is also what the GOP spent decades doing. And why we have this mess. In part.
Been sitting reading, with MSNBC going on Mute on the TV. Poor Steve Kornacki, he looks a wreck-LOL. It is so pitiful that the Attorney Generals and Sec. of State, in so many States, have had to come out and give statements today, apologizing for delays, but wanting all to know that they are ensuring every vote is counted-Does anyone remember a time that we ever had to have such assurances? Isn't that always what Democracy has been about?
And, they assuring that there’s no voter fraud since the Orange Malignant Toad is crying fraud every second. Of course he wouldn’t lose unless the election is rigged. *rolls eyes*

Every gain made leads to an eventu..."You're right, they played the long game, the same with judges. Dems are at a disadvantage in being principled. Although Democrats have done gerrymandering in the past, they mostly now favor putting in nonpartisan groups to do this. But Republicans still are happy to use the system. There weren't any particular gains in statehouses. This is a problem in states like mine (Wisconsin) where the district lines make it virtually impossible for Democrats to be proportionally represented even with majorities.

Well, in non-covid and non-election related news, Jaden applied to his seventh college today (out of ten). This one I think was his first choice. Later he wrote to three of the reps, including choice one lady. And while he did that, I was listening to Friday night services, and they had my favorite (and my father's favorite) prayer blasting in the background - Schechiyanu - prayers for blessing and gratitude. For firsts (He's my first), for thanking God for creating us, sustaining us, and bringing us to this day, this moment. Thats the whole prayer and song. I felt the power. This is the school he wants - that feels like home to him. Keep your prayers up for everything and everyone everywhere that things turn out right. Have the feeling there will be some good old celebrations this weekend. One last thing - Theresa, I am hearing that the Strand needs help. Saw it on Facebook. Can you get down there? For everyone else, if you need a book, please consider ordering it from the Strand in NYC lower east side. 100 year old bookstore in trouble, and people are coming out to support it.

I have had very bad experiences recently and during 2019 with orders at the Strand and my in store experiences have not been great either pre-COVID - it is a tourist trap now. I know it is sacrilege to criticize the store. They no longer have the deals and finds they used to...long before COVID. Now they owe me a couple of expensive books or a refund and I am getting empty promises and a runaround. The Strand isn't just a victim of COVID. It has all the appearance of a business badly run for a very long time. No more support from me.
There are a ton of small bookshops in NYC old and new struggling to survive that give fabulous service - stores like Books Are Magic, Greenlight, Three Lives, Book Culture, Astoria Book Shop, and most of all Kew & Willow which embraces diversity that is experiencing a hate campaign and vandalism requiring expensive repairs. So interesting Theresa to see a fuller picture! Thinking so much about NYC. Used to be we would spend 5 days there every Thanksgiving Weekend. Had breakfast at Sarge's Deli and restaurant or Moonstruck on Thanksgiving Morning. Not this year.
Oh Amy. I love New York. I lived there until I was 35. After moving to Bayside I would go in once a week if possible, first with my kids, then to meet my sisters, But I have really not been there since March ( only one day to visit my sister) And sadly, I have no desire to go now. It's just not the sale. After visiting my sister my husband and I stopped in the Village for Mamouns falafel and I was so turned off by the crows and people sitting almost on top of each other. So sad.

Sorry not to update. A little brain fried here as well.
The wedding was eventful ( the bride's grandmother fell 'down the hatch' of the chartered yacht. Fortunately not seriously injured, but the story is already passing into family history) and ultimately beautiful . Two weeks on, I can also report that all are virus free. Given a true lack of preventative practices that's another small miracle.

I saw the election results and started crying tears of joy. I've never reacted like that to a presidential election before. I know there will be legal fights ahead but I have faith we will have a new president in January.
I literally started dancing. SUCH RELIEF.

I taped the festivities last night and just watched the speeches. That, my friends, is what a President sounds like. I admit, I finally broke down and cried those tears of joy. As the Mayor of Paris tweeted yesterday "Welcome Back America"!

It's amazing to see all the people dancing and celebrating in the streets. How much of a giant douche to you have to be for the world to celebrate you getting fired? He doesn't have to conceded, and he can count those votes until the cows come home, but it's over. Still, I will continue to be a little weary until Biden is sworn in officially.

How can you scream 'Make America Great Again' and 'Keep America Great' while also shouting to stop counting votes and keep a straight face... the irony, I will never understand.
