The Host turning into a movie

I just read on Stephenie Meyer's blog that they're turning The Host into a movie.

I'm wondering how they will pull off all the internal voices going on...

As much as I love the book, I'm worried that Hollywood will butcher it. Do you think they can pull it off?

Weird, the whole book is internal dialog. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it.

Hey, sounds good. I'm always up for a good character-driven scifi, especially if there are no alien costumes. It will be interesting to see how they handle the voices. I guess we'll see if Niccol is as good as Joe Wright (Atonement). I hope they take their time and effort with this one, unlike a certain other unnamed series. Ahem. And it's adult. Yay! I just have to decide whether to read the book first or after.

I really liked the book once I got into it. Very different than Twilight while still hitting some really interesting emotional notes (I thought the emotional inne tionthe readers had to B&E was what really made Tw special). I read a lot of sci-fi and thought it was really original. But I don't know what to tell you about which to do first. I'm usually happier having read first. Even if I get frustrated by changes and omissions, it still makes the movie a fuller experience. Plus I like to have a chance for my own images to develop. But I suspect that this movie will be quite different from the book, both because of length and material, so it might not matter as much.

no real contest on that question New_user--its ALWAYS read it afterwards. That way you aren't sitting in the theatre sobbing your heart out because they butchered it. Also because, depending on WHAT they do, you might need to go in to read it to figure out what the he** is actually supposed to be going on (can we all say DUNE the theatrical release?) Ok, the director's cut was better, and made more sense, but still, that wasn't what you SAW at the theatre. I mean, I actually had friends who were Dune fans who were going what the???? when they saw it, and having to go re-read their disintergrating copies. (And yeah, I AM a geek)

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! You ALWAYS read the book first, no matter how bad you think they'll butcher the movie. It ruins the experience of imagining the characters when you see the movie first, but the movie isn't going to change once you've read the book.

I try not to ever watch a movie without reading its book first.

I agree with Arcadia. There are some movies I haven't seen because I haven't gotten around to the books.

I almost missed the boat with Twilight, I didn't read the series until the beginning of November, but luckily I had been living under a Twilight Shielding rock, because I knew NOTHING about the movie except that it was coming out at the end of November and people LOVED the books. I finished the series in 4 days and got 5 co-workers and 2 friends to read it. I didn't love the movie, but had I seen it first I would never want to take the time to even read those books.

I always used to think that it was better to read the book before seeing the movie - until I saw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Reading the last two books completely spoiled it for me. Couldn't get angry at the end of the movie. Its a tough call though - I always tend to enjoy the book more.

I watched twilight before I read the series and did okay. I actually was kind of glad I watched it first because it probably would have upset me otherwise.

However, for THE HOST, I would recommend reading it before seeing the movie. It was one of those books that made me cry a lot, but I fear the movie will spoil the emotion for you if you don't read it first.

read the book first. new_user. I read it and honestly it took the first 88 pages before i given understood what was happening. I am interested to see how this plays out. Read first that way you know where the storyline is supposed to go

I really enjoyed The Host but I don't know if they can do this book justice. Like everyone else, I don't know how they will pull off the inner dialog. It will be interesting to see.
If you haven't yet read the book, it takes awhile to get into and to understand what's going on, but give it a chance, hopefully you will enjoy it.

Hm, there are downsides to both. If I read it first, I will know everything that happens, and that kills a lot of the excitement of the film for me. I might also be confused if events are interpreted differently in the movie, especially if the movie follows the book closely (Twilight). On the other hand, if I read it afterwards, it will be difficult to form an image of the characters and the emotion will be spoiled for me. So hard...

I've done both at different points with different books, but never with a scifi. Since there's so much going on internally, I think I'm going to read the book first. I have a feeling I'll like it more.

I have heard about this and it is going to be very interesting to see how they pull off making The Host into a movie.... I hope they can do it justice. I for one am a fan of reading book first then watching movie. And I personally think books are always better than the movies :)
