A teenage boy is given a rock from his uncle, that turns out to actually be an egg. A larva hatches from it, and the boy and his girlfriend travel around space trying to get the egg home. At the end, the larva transforms into a winged creature. I believe it was published in the 1950's or '60's. I can't remember the title or author's name. Sound familiar to anyone?
