I'm just starting now too :) Books one and two of this series are a reread but I've forgotten a lot of what happened.

First quarter - (view spoiler)[Libby is introduced as being an actual baby angel from the moment we meet her. Why do these pure characters always have the worst taste in men?? Her boyfriend, Drake, called her younger sister 'jailbait' right in front of her. What a disgusting comment! I needed to know nothing more about him to dislike him! And then she later showed up with a black eye!!!

I'm loving Avery as a protagonist. She is very different from her sister but her tough exterior keeps her interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing some softness shine through more though, once she finds more people to trust like she has with Libby. The Hawthorne's aren't going to make that so easy for her to do, I think though!

I will admit that the Hawthorn grandsons initially seemed all a little cliched with their personality types. Nash, seemed set up to be the bad boy, and rode a motorcycle, for example. But, that was quickly disproven and I love them all! Because of, not despite, their dysfunction!

Zander is another baby angel and I'm looking forward to discovering why Grayson has such a stiff composure and acts like someone triple his years all the time. Does he ever have a day off?? Jameson makes me swoon like he does Avery. There is something about a tortured soul that is so intriguing and I want to know what is hurting him and causing him to act out. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[Oooh Thea is not one to trust! She did unearth another mystery surrounding the Hawthorne's though, even if it was for her own gain and not to aid Avery in discovering what she really has got herself into, living alongside them. I'm eager to learn more about Emily, even though I half-remember what happened there.

It took 143 pages for the reader to learn that Xander was mixed-raced and it has me wondering who all of their dads are. That proved the focus for the rest of this quarter, once the Red Will revealed the four brothers names in it.

I love Jameson but is Nash right that he is using Avery? All the boys have secrets and none can be trusted, even though I want them all to be the heroes not the villains in this story. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[I've definitely been team Jameson but her thinking being more aligned to Grayson's has me revaluating... The scene on the bridge had me thinking they may not be such a good match. Or, maybe, their differences will calm him down as he doesn't really need to be around another livewire like himself.

We are learning more about Emily and I wonder how she fits into the overall story? Thea is growing more likable after she admitted that she knew people disliked her, she just didn't give a shit. Well, maybe likable is too strong a word but I respect her I guess.

I can't believe someone shot at Avery! We haven't seen danger like this before now and Oren's presence is feeling more necessary. They must surely be getting closer to solving the puzzle if someone feels threatened enough to shoot at her, but was it to scare her off or end her life? (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[I just knew that Libby could not have been behind the attacks on Avery but I also knew there was more than just Drake wanting money or revenge. I didn't anticipate Skye though!

These brothers might not initially mean harm but they each have a string of broken girls behind them and there is still so much to unpack as to why this is. I felt so sorry for Avery when she came to the ball and looked just like the dead girl, Emily. Thea really played her there and it felt very much like that one scene in Rebecca. Is it a clue from author to reader somehow that this is also her sister's name?? Or is this book just getting to my head??

Xander's reveal that he fake dated Thea to hide her and Rebecca's relationship cemented my love for him! I also thought him selfless to have solved the puzzle but not initially just go after it himself, before I knew his grandfather had told him all about it just before his passing.

The ending from there was crazy! The puzzle really took central focus and I found it such a spooky read to have Avery and Xander below ground and in one of the secret tunnels. Each brother and Avery were needed to open the final section and so it made all their earlier feuding and sneaking around pointless.

I remembered the reveal that Toby was Harry but it still gave me chills to read it again! (hide spoiler)]

Libby with her horrible taste in men and her want to make everyone happy is going to cause more problems isnt she... I'd like to say I cant believe she told Drake everything but sadly Im not surprised. She had to know he would go to the press. Also he called Avery jailbait he's just disgusting. But as a character she is portrayed as sweet and caring. I do appreciate her fashion sense and how even with a makeover she didn't lose that.

Still curious how Avery was chosen and what her mothers secret was.. Speaking of Avery, I like her as a protagonist. I liked the use of her intelligence with the keys. Seeing her trying to solve puzzles is done well. I also love that she wanted to make sure her chess playing buddy was given shelter and it is one of the first things she did with the money she now has.

As for the grandsons, they are all dysfunctional in their way and none of them have had remotely normal lives. Nash seems to be a sweet bad boy and I want more of his character. Grayson is the angry, jaded, should have been heir. He acts older than his age in most ways and is out to bring Avery down, at least for now. Jameson is the most interesting of the four currently. He drinks and flirts but there's a squishy center in there. Currently he is the only one working with Avery even if it is more like Nash said and Avery is only a puzzle piece. Zander and his robots are just so fun. At first glance he is the typical youngest brother, but its already clear he is so much more.

I like the puzzle nature of the book and cant wait to find out more about why things went this way. What really happened to the brother 20 years ago? (hide spoiler)]

Love that the homeless man Avery was playing chess with was really Toby.
I enjoyed all the puzzles and how it was actually the youngest Hawthorne keeping them all on track. Had to excise the poison of Emily's death. All the secrets and hatred needed to come out so there's a chance to heal.
I hope Libby is actually done with Drake for real now after he tried to kill Avery.
