This one has been a pleasant surprise so far -- I hadn't heard anything about it so wasn't really sure what to expect, but I find myself looking forward to seeing what happens next. All this is very vague, I know, but I'm never sure what's allowed at this juncture.
I enjoyed watching Andrea Stewart in some panels and I am itching to read this - fingers crossed for a copy soon!

We aren't given much information about Lin in the first chapter, but I am interested in seeing how her journey develops. Definitely a cool character, as far as first impressions go.
The worldbuilding with the empire of islands is a nice one. I don't feel the characters yet, but that's not the book's fault. In general I have problems to get into characters in Fantasy novels.
Read the first chapter and I don't have strong impressions about this one. The prose isn't very distinct, the world is too vague in its structure so far, the characters seem to be a little bit one-dimensional. Again, not strong impressions, but by the first chapter alone, I'm not too eager to read the rest.
I am about halfway through; and since there are about 4-5 main characters; we are still in the very early stages of getting to know them; and I think the slower development of characters may be due to it being a beginning of a series that does not info dump - that is my impression so far. I have enjoyed the development of the characters and world. My favorite POV is definitely Jovis and Mephis.
Further along now and thinking about the structure where each chapter is a different character (often ending with a cliffhanger) -- I'd first encountered this format back when I read A Game of Thrones 15 years ago. Does anyone know if George R.R. Martin was the first to popularize this? In any case, I remember staying up late to devour that series once I'd discovered it and by comparison I'm finding this book to be much easier to put down. Still pleasant enough, but hasn't been a compulsive read to this point.
Picked it up last night and only made it through chapter one so far. But I think I might be sold already. I liked the initial setup of the world and it’s magic system. I am eager to read more of it.
Question to those reading, is this striking you as more a plot-driven or character-driven book? (Or where on the continuum would you put it.) I'm thinking about jumping in and trying to catch up with the group, but just trying to get a feel for what it's like.
Page 6 and I am already wondering if this is going to have a massive twist. Back to coffee and bone shards.

Levi wrote: "Question to those reading, is this striking you as more a plot-driven or character-driven book?."I guess it is character-driven, at least communications and feelings play a major part
50 pages in and the fourth island/set of characters about to begin. My confidence is waning but it is still compelling.
My impression after 1 chapter: this feels like a fun, quick fantasy read, but not one that's going to really wow me or be hard to put down.
The beginning is reminding me of gideon the ninth, with bones and keys and doors. Maybe it's a new thing in fantasy now, away from the green hills and magical portals and into the halloween themes instead. I have read since yesterday evening and are having a hard time putting it down. It's so good!
it's part of Amazon's Daily deal today for $1.99 (Note: non-US residents may have the same price or a higher or lower price)

I'm just a few chapters in and I'm bouncing off it pretty hard so far. It just feels...so generic. I wanna focus on the cool bits, but so far all the cool bits seem like set dressing for the same "corrupt gov't toppled by a ragtag gang of millennial-stand ins" story I've just read so many ding-dang times.

Finally got my library loan! I’m about 40% I think and I’m really enjoying it! I agree it isn’t terribly groundbreaking but I’m immersed. My favorite POV is Lin(sp?) I’m listening to the audio and don’t know how things are spelled. :-P The audio is well done though.
Getting an early start on this for the June 2023 re-read. I am liking it so far. I'm listening to the audiobook, and I am a bit worried about keeping all of the storylines straight with the chapters being told from different points of view - usually I eye-read this kind of book. So far, though, it hasn't been too hard. The audiobook narration is good, and I like the chapters being told from different characters' perspectives (though I think Jovis is my favorite POV right now).
I started early too. Four chapters in, so far. Definitely an interesting world and characters. It looks like I still have a couple POV characters to meet.
Meredith wrote: "I think that's right."Thanks. I think I need to get the second book. Will you all be continuing right away?

Probably not for a few months.

For me, it will depend on how the first book ends - if I still like the story by the end, and it is a cliff-hanger, I will probably read the second one right away. If not, I have other books in my to-read pile that I may tackle first.
I've recently finished the last book in this trilogy and loved them all a lot. Just wanted to say that I highly recommend the audio books for this series. Mephi's little voice - too cute! Each POV has a different narrator.

Got it, I'll be open to read the next one.
Doing this for the re-read. Six chapters in, have met four sets of characters/islands. So far I like Jovis and Phalue the best.
