This nearly put me to sleep. It is not on par with other of his books. It is set in southern Scotland during the 16th century. There were some bright spots - a little romance and some supernatural elements, but the majority of the book was just plain dull. There were also too many loose ends left at the end of the book, even after trudging through hundreds of pages with little happening.

This is a Scott novel so going into it I wasn’t expecting it to be short but in all honesty did it have to be so long winded? Once we got past the bizarre introduction which explains how the story came to be published the story did pick up and I did enjoy the supernatural elements.
The problem for me is the story is written so stiffly even the exciting bits didn’t exactly race along, the bits in dialogue I must admit to skimming over because…well life is short and when I finally got to the end it was more a dull fizzle than an worthwhile payoff for the amount of time spent reading. (18 days).
