GailW (abbygg) | 657 comments I read Hidden in Plain Sight by Jeffrey Archer for the prompt "A book with a "heroic" character".

message 52: by Karen (new)

Karen | 94 comments I read Behind Her Eyes, for the prompt " a book related to dreams." I used this prompt as basically a free pass, reading something I just wanted to read, and then choosing a prompt for it when I finished.

message 53: by Donna (new)

Donna | 168 comments I chose Candyfreak: A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America by Steve Almond for the prompt "A Food Item on the Cover". I loved everything about this book! My name is Donna and I am a Chocoholic. ; )

message 54: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 456 comments The prompt that I selected was A book from the 2020 NPR Book Concierge.
It is a fantastic resource that encouraged me to read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab.

message 55: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments 1. What prompt did you choose and why?
I chose "A book with an introverted protagonist." It was a prompt I voted for but ended up in the bottom of the poll, which is unusual for me, so I wanted to give it a try! I also had the perfect book in mind for it.

2. What book did you read for it?
I read Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon. It's a sci fi story about an old woman who chooses to remain behind on a formerly colonized planet that's since been abandoned because she's just so tired of dealing with people who don't take her seriously. She luxuriates in the freedom of being literally the only human being on this planet and is extremely disgruntled when (view spoiler).

3. What other prompts did you consider?
If I hadn't read Remnant Population, I definitely would have chosen to read The Snow Child for the "second chance" prompt: I loved that idea and really wanted to use it to give a second chance to an author I had read before and not liked so much but felt was promising enough to give a second try.

message 56: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 349 comments 1. What prompt did you choose and why?
A book where the author has the same first and last initial as you
I suggested this prompt.

2. What book did you read for it?
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

3. What other prompts did you consider?
I considered just about everything!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments A book with a non-binary or trans character or author - I recommend
The Deep by Rivers Solomon. (I believe the author is non-binary, based on their picture, and the use of non-binary pronouns in the bio.)

Their newer book is: Sorrowland

added:

I just read a very positive review for: Detransition, Baby which sounds fascinating.

That's a good one!

I didn't even notice this prompt before. I found that I share a birthday with Kevin Bacon, and I thought of the game Six degrees of Kevin Bacon - or six degrees of separation. I'm reading short story books this month so I have a couple possibilities of books with loosely connected characters.

Pamela | 2275 comments Mod
Noone get mad, my tongue is a tiny bit in my cheek for this, although the more I think about it, not,

1. What prompt did you choose and why? A book featuring a theme of women overcoming systemic obstacles. I picked it laughing as it's a chic lit book of ageism and older women not being allowed to be themselves or seen as sexy, but really, it's a big issue and I'm upset!
2. What book did you read for it? Gray Hair Don't Care
3. What other prompts did you consider
I was planning to do z as I was going to read the Lenny Kravitz memoir but I really do hate memoirs, even if it's Lenny.

message 61: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (prairielily) | 177 comments 1. What prompt did you choose and why?
A book with a major life altering event in the plot. I chose the prompt to fit the book!

2. What book did you read for it?
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

3. What other prompts did you consider?
I am using this as a freebie!

message 62: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments Nancy wrote: "As of now, I picked the trapped together prompt, as that's one of my favorite tropes of late. And the book I slated is The Hunting Party. My other option is a book about books."

I'm going through the prompts and posting what I read, vs what I planned to read.

When Andy Weir's newest, Project Hail Mary came out, I knew I had to read it. And it nicely fit the prompt "A book about or set in outer space."

I do still plan to read The Hunting Party this year, as trapped together was a close call, and I am doing a close calls challenge.

message 63: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments What prompt did you choose and why?
A book that is older than your mom Poll 11. I wanted to read this book so found a prompt where it would fit. As this was first published in 1890, I thought it was older than anybody's mom

What other prompts did you consider?
I was originally going to read a book about a nun Poll 12

message 64: by Wendy (last edited Aug 01, 2021 03:11PM) (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 393 comments I'm going with "a book related to nuns" and reading The Bell by Iris Murdoch. This was one of my top category picks during the voting, so I'm glad to be able to fit it in here!

Other categories I considered were:
- a book off the "500 great books by women" list (actually, The Bell works for this too!)
- featuring a ghost, vengeful spirit, or lost soul
- related to music
- related to the element Scandium
- one of the first 20 books on my TBR
- with an endangered animal on the cover

message 65: by Arunimaa (new)

Arunimaa | 39 comments I chose "A book related to a technological advancement." from the No Designation Category of Poll1.

I read The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lawrence
The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren

So, this book is all about the making of this really cool dating app which requires users to send in their spit sample and they are able to match you with people who genetically compatible with you i.e. your soulmate supposedly. There is a lot more scientific crazy stuff in it which I thought was pretty cool. It would be crazy if someday we actually have something like this.

message 66: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments The book I chose, Eden Mine by the brilliant S.M. Hulse, could either fit the prompt 'a book related to the 21st chemical element Scandium', or the prompt related to a mineral. In either case, I love this woman's writing and was determined to read her latest novel this year no matter what. It was fantastic!

message 67: by Anne (last edited Aug 19, 2021 01:16PM) (new)

Anne | 307 comments I chose the prompt 'A book with the letter Z on the cover' as I have
abook in I want to read.
I am going to read The Maiden's Tale by Margaret Frazer.
I could have chosen the prompt 'A book closely related to what you wanted to be as a kid' as I am currently reading a book about a vet that does not fit any ot the other prompts for 2021 which I have left to read.

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments I used the prompt "A book that is not a graphic novel but has illustrations" and read a children's non-fiction Who Was Napoleon?. I wanted to learn a little more about Napoleon and that time period since I'm currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo. I also needed a quick read since I'm behind in the challenge!

message 74: by Jenni (last edited Dec 23, 2021 01:10PM) (new)

Jenni (jennyftb) | 38 comments Optional Questions
1. What prompt did you choose and why?
I chose a close call prompt, "a book with a focus on the natural world" which fit a book club selection that I didn't read in 2019.

2. What book did you read for it?
I read The Crows of Beara by Julie Christine Johnson. It's set in Ireland and tells the story of Annie Crowe, a PR specialist hired to help a mining conglomerate "sell" its mining operation to the people of the Beara peninsula as bringing much needed jobs to the community, despite the fact that the mine will destroy the beautiful, natural environment there and endanger the red-billed chough, which has a habitat limited to the peninsula and which is already in a very precarious position environmentally.

3. What other prompts did you consider?
I considered "a book with a house on the cover" because The Smell of Other People's Houses has been on my eTBR stack for awhile and I was hoping to read it in 2021, but my library doesn't have it.
