Moses sending 12 spies into Caanan

The Israelites are at Kadesh-Barnea, the doorway to the promised land, after escaping the slavery of Egypt. Instead of going "all in" and occupying the land Moses decides to send 12 spies to scout out the land and bring a report back. What happened on that 40-day mission?
