I'm looking for a book I would have read about 2014-2016 written by a (possibly) male author. The book is part of a duology about a boy who is part of the higher class in his society. He meets a girl who has escaped the lower half of the ship where people work with coal to fuel the ship (which is amphibious). There is no free movement between the upper and lower sections of the ship. She sneaks into his room in the first chapter of the book and wakes up to find her hiding in his room and she then leaves.

The boy is at the top of his academy and has a wealthy family. He eventually finds his way to the lower half of the ship where he meets the girl again along with her companions who make fun of him for being so clean. Eventually, he starts meeting with the girl and her group more frequently and start to make plans for a revolution to allow the people of the lower part of the ship to live up top.

Their plan gets set in motion. At one point, the girl disguises herself as a wealthy young lady and is caught by the boy's grandmother who tries to turn her into a mindless slave. Grandmother gets killed or dealt with. Eventually, the revolution ends with many of the upper half of the ship leaving the ship entirely and deciding to live on the Earth.

The second book picks up where the boy and girl and others are trying to figure out a new leading system for the remaining population on the ship, and eventually get into a war or battle with other groups on land.
