i read it between 2005-2010, in elementary or middle school. it's about a girl who arrives to new orleans on a boat, either from the northern part of the usa or from europe, though i'm not completely sure on this part. she ends up living in the city; i think she's looking for her father. she ends up working in or near a bakery. there's a scene at night on a staircase in the rain in the dark. the cover was purple. when i read it, i thought it was similar to the "my america" series, but i'm pretty sure it wasn't one of them.
