Adam | 3 comments There is a main character in the story who is missing fingers from previous battles and he often chews or gnaws on his finger nubs when he is nervous or agitated. There is a battle in the library at one point and this character finds out that he possessed the power of a berserker. He feels no pain, his wounds do not bleed, and his strength is amplified allowing him to beat his foes.

Adam, is this book for adults or teens?

Is the main character a soldier, general, etc.? Does he wield magic? Who is the enemy?

Adam | 3 comments the main character is more of a archer ranger type character in the beginning of the story. In his past he had battled and shows scars and disfigurement, mainly his missing fingers. But he no longer fights except to live. he goes into great detail about hiding amongst brush, sticking to shadows, and quietly treading through the forest as he hunts with his bow. He is almost a recluse due to his haggard appearance. I believe the only reason he joins in this conflict is to protect a girl who knows magic and at the request of someone he worked with in the past. The enemy is a neighboring kingdom; humans that are brutal in battle. magic is present in the world but it is dying out and most magic users either lost their connection to it or can only perform tricks or small illusions. The girl is considered special because she can wield magic at a level most have never seen. She is taken to a tower where she is poked and prodded to see her potential and possibly reveal the secret to her magical abilities. I know there is a death and the funeral is viking like(boat set out and shot with an arrow on fire.) the main character journeys to the land of the dwarves and underground he meets with their king and asks for help with the oncoming battle because if the human kingdom is taken then the dwarf kings would most likely be next. The dwarf king sends some of his men back to the human kingdom to help; they develop gunpowder and build machines of war(cannons, ballista, powder bombs.) There is a large library in the kingdom and they use it to research the magic's ties to the girl and to develop the proper formula for the gunpowder and weapon design. Here they are attacked and while most of the others present are weak or not familiar with battle, the main character is stuck with fighting of a team of soldiers assassins. This is the moment he taps into a berserker rage and battles relentlessly. His wounds do not bleed, he is blind with rage, his strength and stamina are greatly multiplied passed his norms, and he defeats them. The final battle is terrible, almost a slaughter on both ends. The new king, very young due to his father's death, rushes into battle with his men and before they can get everyone together for a retreat the young king is killed: his head is removed and placed on a pike, maybe on a wagon.

The book seems to be more adult; there are sex scenes and lots of violence.

Adam is still looking for this book:

"Trying to find a fantasy book, this is driving me insane! (2010-2015)

Fantasy style book, not the first law series...

I have been looking for this book for years with no luck so here it goes.

The story starts in some sort of enemy stronghold, maybe a cave or something similar with fighting going on. There is a pivotal character who is kind of a rogue-ish/Ranger type character. He used to be a famous soldier but now mostly keeps to himself. He describes hunting, hiding amongst the brush and sticking to the shadows while in the woods. He has suffered many injuries and views himself as gross and scarred. Scarred up face and body and he is missing multiple fingers. When he is nervous or bored he sort of gnats or chews on the stumps of his severed fingers. This character, almost at the end of the book, finds out that he is a berserker type character. The battle in question takes place in a library/research area that is under attack. He sort of blacks out and kills all the enemies. There is magic in this world, but it is dying out and using it is rare. There is a girl who can use magic and she is unusually powerful, more so than most other magic users. She is taken to the usual magic users, kind of like a council. They stay in a tower and this is where she is taken. The warrior missing fingers and this magic using girl later develop a relationship. There is a conflict between this kingdom and another and war is coming. The king dies or is killed and the young son of the king must take his place. At the kings funeral, he goes out viking style and the son is suppose to launch the arrow that ignites his boat. He misses the first try. To aid them in the battle, since they can't really rely on magic, they plan to go to the dwarves kingdom in the mountains to ask for their help. They negotiate help from the dwarves king, he sends some dwarves and supplies back with them to their kingdom. They use gun powder and develop cannons and bombs*this does not happen until the book is almost over.* They go into battle and with the cannons they seem to be winning but something causes the battle to shift negatively and the newly appointed young king gets beheaded and his head is left on display, maybe on a wagon."

Andrea Parry | 4 comments It really does sound like Logan Ninefingers in the First Law series but you say it’s not that. And it’s not The Heroes?

Willow | 10 comments Possibly either Eragon or something in the Rangers Apprentice series (probably one of the side books and not the main series)? Neither of them exactly fit by it’s worth a shot
