Group of kids/teens go to a relative's house that's supposed to be empty. Mysterious things start happening to try to scare them away. 1990s or earlier.

I read this book for young readers in the mid 1990s. For a reason I don’t remember, this group of friends go to a house of a relative of one of them, thinking it’s empty. Then mysterious things begin to happen that scare them, but they stay to investigate. It turned out that someone was trying to scare them away, thinking they were trespassers. There might have been a secret passage that the person used to move about unseen. He also made the house pitch black to create these “haunted” illusions.

Can you describe some of the mysterious things that happen in the house? Are there ghosts?

I suppose it’s a YA genre, as best as I can remember. Other than what I’ve written, I don’t remember really what scary things happened. One of the group might have disappeared during at some point, creating more fear. It all happened in the span of one night. Things seemed to move on their own and disappear, but I can’t remember specifics.
