I read this book in 2004 in Paperback. It was likely 10-20 years old at that time (let’s just say 80s or 90s. I’d have bet my life on the fact that this was written by Michael Crichton. Protagonist is on a hike. He sees a beam of light descending from the sky on top of a flat Mesa/Rock in the desert. He climbs to examine it and is sent to an alternate dimension with tribal “beings’ that are similar to humans. He learns their language and falls in love with Megaan (yes, 2 a’s). At the end he finds the beam again and is teleported back to Earth in the middle of a shopping mall. Later, he is in a room alone and talks to Megaan aloud. Someone goes “what’s a Megaan?’. This awkward comment is what helped me remember the book (I suppose the fact that the proper noun flew over the other character ‘s head struck me as odd.

Anyways. I believe the title was 2 or 3 words (likely 2).
