Always, for quite a few years I've had an email correspondence with Steve. I'd run into him at a sci-ficom. in either Portland or Seattle (I can't remember which) -- and had, of course hung around to "bump into him" - As it happens, we shared a huge amount of "Have you reads....?" It eventually developed into an online correspondence - every few months or so.As it happens, after I joined GR a little while ago, I was so impressed with the quality and knowledge of most of the comments that I mentioned it to Steve. The problem is, as I'm sure you aware, the man simply has NO TIME. What little he has to himself he treasures, (that's why no Facebook or anything like it) He loves his Constant Readers, but we have become such a large number of people all over the world that he says it does feel sometimes like people are always asking for a small piece of him. That's one of the reasons he announced his "retirement" several years ago. Fortunately, he's just too much the writer to just stop, and we are lucky enough to get the results!
It's not snobbery, or anything like that... Uncle Stevie just needs some ALONE time -- (but I will tell you not to be surprised if one of his characters logs on suddenly... never to be heard from again.... His favorite "name" for these quick comments is Gage Creed.

In No Way Shape Or Form, did I ever think the man was a Snob... Far from it... But it just seemed 2 me that we are in a kinda SK rut & I'll be Honest..... My dream is to meet the Man Himself 1 day, if only for a moment long enough to say; "I love your Books, Misery's my favorite. Could You Sign It....Or Thank You for Everything.... Yadda, yadda, yadda.... :)
I have Misery's 1st edition "paperback" because I just like paperbacks now.
I dreamed about Him all night a few nights ago for the 1st time ever & in a way, I guess I miss seeing his cameo's in the "movie versions" or the cool "Amex" commercial he did, years back.
I just miss seeing him..... But a Live Appearance wouldn't be so bad ether :)

Who knows, maybe he's on here under another name so he can get some honest feed back. It could happen.

Patrick, you give The Road too much credit, I think. It was good, but not THAT good. He should just say "Never have I read a work of such importance!" ;)

Well, I haven't read it yet... (But soon!) I just don't think The Road deserves such massive praise.
Just wait, Becky, there's something about "The Road" that reaches in, grabs your heart and marks you.. I really think you'll like it.
Oh, no. I've read The Road. I haven't read Patrick's book yet.
I just want to mention that I did give The Road 4 stars when I read it. I identified with the man and his son, and I love post-apocalyptic fiction, but the more I think back on the writing style (which I referred to in my review as "snapshots") the more I dislike it. It's one thing to be "in the moment" and enjoy something while you're reading it, but in my opinion, if it doesn't hold up in memory, its not that great.

Hey, I don't know if anybody cares. But I finally saw a movie this weekend [thanx 2 netflix:] That was So much reminiscent of S.K.'s novel Firestarter... I just thought it was so cool,[for lack of a better word:]that he's really influenced most of the coming up generation.....

Wesley, I wish I could be more encouraging, but Steve has a life long policy of NOT engaging by email, except with friends. If you ever do get lucky, you are sworn not to give his email address to anyone else. But... you might try contacting him through his web page -- As you say, we can dream.. Right now he's in the final stages of firming up the release of "Under the Dome" so it may not be a good time. I did tell him about our group, but in his answer, he never gave any indication about "dropping in"
Just as well. I am sure he probably heard of at least a million constant readers' groups with their own digital shrines to him.
I love this discussion...I too would love for "the man himself" to drop in and give us the gift of a few words. But like Bondama says, the man must treasure his time to himself...not just with writing, but with children and grandchildren, not to mention the fact that he obviously has a terrific marriage. I used to write him the occasional fan letter. Right around when INSOMNIA came out I got a mass-produced reply. He said he VERY much appreciated the fact that I love his work and he wished he could send me a personal letter, but he gets so much fan mail that if he replied to every one of them he wouldn't have time to write the stories. That completely placated me, because if I had to choose between getting a personal letter from him or a published novel, I'd have to go with the book. Of course, if he ever dropped in here and read any of these comments I'd want him to know that he has an open invitation to hang out with me, but in the end, for me, it's all about the story! Can't wait for UNDER THE DOME!!!One more thing...I do have sympathy for him about the "everyone seems to want a piece of me". He may be richer than God, but he is after all a regular guy who wants a regular life. He just happens to be talented and loves what he does and it's a shame that some people just don't get that.
Maybe he can do something like a letter lottery in which he pick out a letter from millions of letters and then sit down and answer that one.
