The book is about a dwarf that just reached puberty, he is 50 years old. He goes on an adventure with new friends on a ship. I know there is a quest of some kind but I can't remember the finer details. I think his family might build ships? I remember him knowing all different types of nautical knots.
At some point they go to this city of thieves and are looking for something and they have to trade in non monetary items, like memories or things that have personal importance.

I know I read this book in high school, probably before 2013 but definitely before 2015.
