SOLVED. YA Book about King Lear school play. Read in early 1990's. [s]

I am trying to find the name and author of a book I read in the early 1990's.

The cover was beige/ light yellow and the text was in dark red/ burgundy.

I think the girl was on the cover in a dark blue school uniform.

It is set in England/ the UK in the present time.

There was a teenage? girl who lived with her father who was an alcoholic. Her mother had passed away (recently?).

Plot points:

There is a school play of King Lear. The boy she fancies auditions and she is cast as Cordelia.

She makes rock cakes

There is a school trip to France

Her father sobers up and meets her when she returns from France

I know you've dismissed it, but I think Your Friend Rebecca might be worth a look. The googlebooks descriptions reads, "Since her mother's death, Rebecca does not communicate well with others, especially her father, but auditions for King Lear prove to be the cathartic release she needs to help her sort out her problems." The second edition was published in 1994.
