Thanks Rosemarie, I'll go for Hella S. Haasse from the original suggestions.

We have a few more suggested authors who need seconds. If you have only seconded one author, please feel free to go ahead and second another author if you wish.

Here is the list of authors that have been selected for 2021:

1. Honoré de Balzac - France
2. Franz Kafka - Czech Republic
3. Hermann Broch - Austria
4. Władysław Stanisław Reymont/ Bolesław Prus - Poland
5. Albert Camus - Algeria, France
6. Voltaire - France
7. Germaine de Staël - France
8. Hans Fallada - Germany
9. Emilia Pardo Bazán - Spain
10. Camilo José Cela - Spain
11. Eça de Queirós - Portugal
12. Hella S. Haasse - Batavia, Netherlands

I have included two authors from Poland, since the books of Reymont may be hard to find. The Doll by Bolesław Prus is easier to find.

Thanks for the suggestions!

As for the Russian authors, I am planning a special project in which there will be a list of Russian books/authors that we have not read with the group yet, or that I really enjoyed reading-but not by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov or Gogol.

I am looking for informal susggestions of books you think might fit this category.

Sounds good, Kathy. We definitely need to read something by Pushkin!

Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak maybe?

Thank you, Peter.
I have read The Mother and think it is a worthwhile book.
The Twelve Chairs was already on my to-read list, so it's nice to see it on your list.

I’m excited to see the 2021 list! I’ve only read Voltaire and Camus so it’s mostly new authors to me. I’m very interested in the Russian author project! I’m planning to focus on reading Russian authors (classic & contemporary) next year. I’d like to suggest Sci-Fi authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Some of their works are in the classics time frame.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will have to look at availability. You can also recommend them to Patrick for his science fiction list.

message 116: by Mikiko (new)

Mikiko (mikikoschot) | 52 comments Just catching up on this thread and am excited that Hella Haasse is for July (my birthday month). My mother-in-law has all the books by H.Haasse plus she gives me a book from a Dutch author as a birthday or Christmas gift, so I have a few of my own by H.Haasse. Looking forward to reading the others on the list as well.

That's great, Mikiko. I have been wanting to read some of her books, so it's good to hear that your mother likes her, since she is probably around my age!

Melissa | 5 comments Can we open a thread for little known classics, or buddy reads? It can be a separate conversation. I’ve got a couple on my shelf, one from Japan, that I really should get to :)

message 119: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 5 comments Whoops! Sorry, I just saw the buddy reads thread. Thanks!!
