Gbolahan (halosbane-kitchenstaffpikin) | 157 comments Hi guys.
I read this (paperback?) between 1987 and 1993.
Fantasy, magic. There was a talking cat that later became the king of cats. This cat belonged to the boy prince. This cat was rather laid back. Very calm and collected.
There was a box that contained, I think, fruits from the garden of Eden. When opened, a bright light comes out and I think it turns people to animals. Everybody wanted this box.
I think the book was illustrated.
At the end, some people (cats??) came to tell this talking cat that the cat's father was dead and he was like "oops, that means I'm the king of cats"

Man, I hope all above helps . It's been seriously bugging me.
Thank you.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Do you remember anything about the cover?
Part of a series?
Time period/location story takes place?

Did the story focus more on the cat or the prince? What/Who was the main conflict/villain?

CLM | 311 comments That sounds very familiar. Could it be Grimbold's Other World or part of the Carbonel: The King of Cats series? Or possibly Merlin in The 13th is Magic?

Ugh! >frustrated groan<
I don't think it's Carbonel: The King of Cats, it's definitely not The 13th Is Magic...
Grimbold's Other World...hmmmm...I almost wish it was the one...sounds close...but I don't think it's the one.
What I've done is ask some people on goodreads who have read Grimbold's if there was a box of light. I also asked as a general question on Grimbold's page on goodreads.
Thank you so much for your help...but PLEASE still help me search...! Thank you....! ☺

The cover...nah, I remember nothing of the cover.
I'm not sure if it was part of a series, I read it as a kid...
Time period was medieval, horses and chariots and stuff...
Location... Uh... Britain? Sorry, not sure...
I think the story focused more on the prince... (man, I just hope he was a prince, but that's what I remember him to be... ☺)
The main villain...uhm..., I think it was a sorcerer in the palace...once again, not sure. But I THINK he was turned into an animal by the box too...
Hope that helps...!
Thanx...!

While I really doubt this is your book, thought I'd throw it out there anyway. (Mainly because it's always the right time to recommend a Terry Pratchett book.) The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

Ha ha ha ha ha ha...
It's NEVER wrong to recommend Pratchett...his silliness is astounding. I'm yet to finish one of the Discworld stories though, something about whether the turtle carrying the 4 elephants carrying the Discworld has a mate.
Or is it an elephant that is carrying 4 turtles that carry the Discworld?

4 elephants standing on the back of a turtle. (Based on Indian mythology, if I'm remembering correctly--although it could be Chinese or Japanese, but I really think it was Indian.)

And I do love Pratchett. He's helped me out many a time when I am having a bad day (Health issues of the permanent type.)

Ah. Life...
Thank God for humans like Pratchett...

Yeeeaaah, probably not The Cats of Seroster.

Oh boy. The list you sent has 49 books in it...oh well, wish me luck. I'll let you know if I find it on the list as I check 'em one by one.
Thanx.

Huh...birds...?
Ahh, I just don't remember...
But...I think at least one person was turned into a...a crow? Maybe the bad guy...?
And I think (emphasis on think) the effects were irreversible...

One review says both the prince and the cat get crowned in the end, and according to the Kirkus review: "Michael recaptures the stolen Astalon diamond whose rays turn the Under People armies back into fish

Yes! Yes! That's the one...! Thank you so much...!
>sigh!< Now how I wish I could just get it to read now...Apparently it's on Kindle, but not on Kobo...and I don't have a Kindle...!
Once again, thank you so much Ayshe. Much obliged.

Amanda (misterfive) | 215 comments You can always read Kindle books online if you don't have a Kindle. There's a free cloud reader for it. There are also free Kindle apps for mobile devices and tablets.

Thanx.
But how exactly can I read Kindle books online? How do I get this free cloud reader you mentioned?
I actually have (or had...I think I have uninstalled it, I'll check after posting this...) a Kindle app on my Android device, but I was never allowed to make any purchases, unlike the Kobo app I have on my Android.
When I contacted Amazon, they said something about publishers not allowing Kindle app purchases for their books yet where I am (Nigeria). And they (Amazon) claimed to be working on it.
That was about 2 years ago.
So, the Kindle books online you mentioned? The free cloud reader?
Thanx once again.

Yup, I had uninstalled the Kindle app some weeks ago. I got tired of waiting for Amazon to "talk to publishers" to release books for purchase in Nigeria...

Amanda (misterfive) | 215 comments Not being able to purchase is a different thing. I doubt the cloud reader would solve that problem, unless you are able to purchase online through the website, and just not through an app? If you can purchase on the website, it offers the link to the browser-based cloud reader as an option for reading the Kindle book when you buy it. (At least, it does that on the US site.)

Bummer.
Couldn't buy in the app, can't buy on the website.
Thanx for trying...

Michele | 279 comments Go to openlibrary.org and sign up - it's free. They have an ebook copy you can borrow. You have to set some stuff up on your computer to read it I think, but then it's just like a library book - you check it out, read it, then return it. And they only have one copy available, so you might have to wait, etc. I've found a couple of older books here.

https://openlibrary.org/search?q=The+...

Edit to add - I checked and you can read it right in their browser without doing anything.

Wow!
That worked out beautifully...!
I clicked the link you sent and signed up into openlibrary. Had some difficulties downloading the book as pdf or epub cos it was saying I needed Adobe Digital Editions Reader (whatever that is) which incidentally was only available for Apple devices, and I use an Android device...
Anyways, I clicked to read directly on the website, and it brought out clean scanned pages of the book...! Neat!
Thank you Michele...!

message 28: by Michele (new)

Michele | 279 comments Yeah, you have to set up the Adobe thing on a computer and then you can connect it to a device I guess somehow (there are a bunch of instructions somewhere about how to do it all) - I have it set up on my laptop (PC) but not my phone/tablet yet.

Anyways, I'm glad it works! It's great for hard to find older stuff sometimes.

Yeeaahh, the Windows 8 PC i started using about 6 months ago came with Kindle for PC pre-installed. I have just not ever bothered to log on into it with my Kindle account because i assumed i still won't be able to buy ebooks in it considering what Amazon said about publishers and my location and all...
Thanx...
