A very interesting and informative article, Charlotte. Thank you for finding it and sharing it with us.

No brilliant insights to share as of the first five chapters, but I have to say I love how 19th century authors’ attitude when they reveal the scandal of a young woman spending time with a man in public. Like it’s self-evident, which it would have been to them. We, meanwhile, if we’re careless readers (like I was when I read Pride and Prejudice in high school) scratch our heads over the hysteria. Rachel seems levelheaded enough to give Elizabeth Bennett a run for her money, but I’m getting an uncomfortable vibe from her paramour.

A nice comparison you've made there between Elizabeth and Rachel. I hope P&P fans won't be offended. :) You are not alone in having a bad vibe about Rachel's paramour. Since you brought P&P in, I'd like to know whether Wickham came to your mind when you read of Luke. :)
And if you don't mind me saying Gregg, kindly post this into the thread for Chapters I-V. I'm sure other members would love to read your comment.

I would love to join (I have Trollope's complete works), but on the other hand, I have borrowed books at the library that I need to return and if I don't tackle that TBR physical pile, I'll never have enough room to add more books.... But it's tempting. I'm on lockdown, so I'll see if I don't change my mind next week :)

I completely understand your dilemma :) This is fairly a short book, however, and if you can squeeze it, we'll be happy to have you in. :)

I've finally caught up, but I noticed "XV" has been written twice for week three and five. To the moderator, did you mean to write "XXV"? Also, my copy is not split into volumes, so this discrepancy may only pertain to me.
It's Chapter XXV, Daniel, and I believe I've got it right. I can't see that I've repeated it twice.
Perhaps it's chapter X you saw which was accidentally repeated in week 3 which should have been chapter XI.
