ABANDONED. YA - Character makes a key using a crayon and wood

I remember reading a book in grade school where a character was locked in a room but had a crayon and a piece of wood (maybe a popsicle stick) and marked the wood with the crayon to try the lock, whittling away in the places where the crayon rubbed off. Anyone know which book I'm trying to remember?
