Hi Lisa and welcome! How did you discover Eleanor Powell?

message 152: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, everyone. My name is Alan, and I’m from Arlington, Texas. I love reading old books and watching old movies. Best of all, I like to read the books from which screenplays were adapted. Often, I’ll watch the movie, then read the book, and then watch the movie again. Among my favorites are “The Thin Man”, “The Uninvited” (the 1944 version), “The Postman Always Rings Twice” (the 1946 version), “To Kill A Mockingbird”, and “Hondo”. I just joined the group and have enjoyed reading through some of the discussion threads—lots of interesting folks in this group!

Bruce | 3 comments Alan, you should consider joining our Dallas Classic Film Group. We've been screening silent and classic era films on 16mm and BluRay once a month since 2000. We usually watch films at a house in North Dallas. If you are on Facebook, look for the Dallas Classic Film Group and ask to join.

Thank you, Bruce.

Hi Samantha! I discovered Eleanor Powell when "That's Entertainment" came out years ago. Each time she came on screen, her talent just jumped out at me. I was a dancer (mostly ballet and jazz), but I had never seen anyone tap like that! I wanted to see more of her, but at the time, it wasn't easy to see her films. Months later, an old revival house in Los Angeles had an Eleanor Powell retrospective, and I got a great introduction to the Broadway Melody films and to Miss Powell herself, as she was there, too!

As we dove deeper into her work, my co-author, Paula Broussard, and I realized how overlooked she was, and how her story deserved to be told. Now, over forty years and countless research hours later, we are looking forward to the publication of her first full biography, "Eleanor Powell: Born to Dance" in August 2023.

Hi Zoe, I was once like you. I grew up watching vintage movies and shows here and there because my parents liked them, but I became passionate about them in my late teens. Now I run a movie convention.

I'm glad you found us!
