Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments OK, here goes! This is an outrageous endeavour, but I'm gonna see if I can pull it off.

Pre-Readathon Challenge items:
1 - Read a "long" book (over 500 pages)
2 - DONE! Read a "short" book (under 250 pages)
3 - DONE! Pick 5 of your favorite genres and enter them in a randomizer. Read a book in that genre.
4 - DONE! Read a "spooky" book (your own definition of spooky is fine)
5 - DONE! Read a book that is 75% one color on the cover.
6 - DONE! Read a book that was published in the last 18 months.
7 - Read a book that was published more than 100 years ago.
8 - DONE! Read a book set in the Fall or with a cover that looks like it is Fall (leaves changing, etc)
9 - Read a book set in the Spring or with a cover that looks like it is Spring (trees blooming, etc)
10 - Read at least 75% of a book when it's dark outside
11 - DONE! Read at least 75% of a book outside (please social distance... a park or back patio will do fine)
12 - Read a book with an animal (real or made up) on the cover
13 - Read a book with a main character or author whose first name starts with the same letter as your first name.
14 - Take five books you really want to read and put them in a randomizer and read whichever one is chosen.
15 - DONE! Read a book that is set in a location you wish you could visit or live in. This location can be real or imaginary.

This Was Our Pact by Ryan Andrews This Was Our Pact by Ryan Andrews

One down, 14 to go! This Was Our Pact is a graphic novel about some boys who decide to follow the lanterns that are sent down the river during the autumn equinox celebration, and see where they go. It was really beautiful and needs to be a Studio Ghibli movie.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments I have four on the go for this challenge now:

For #1 (the long book) I'm reading Machine of Death: A Collection of Stories About People Who Know How They Will Die. I started this one in February but have actually hardly read any of it.

For #10 (book read mostly when it's dark outside) I'm reading Stars In Her Eyes. This was an easy choice because it's my current ebook, and I always read on my Kobo in bed, so basically any ebook I read is always read when it's dark out! I just started it a few days ago and am only a few pages in (because I've been falling asleep really fast lately lol).

For #11 (book read mostly outside) I'm reading Haiti Noir. This was another easy choice; it's my current audiobook, which I always listen to on my walks to and from work.

For #15 (set in a location you wish you could visit), I just started Are These My Basoomas I See Before Me?, which is set in England. This is the last book in the series and the only one I haven't read, and I started this series probably 15 years ago! So I'm pumped to finally find out how Georgia's story wraps up.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments Update: I'm changing my long book, to be more honest to the challenge. I have less than 500 pages remaining in Machine of Death (and in fact I think it may actually be slightly less than 500 pages long; I think the number of pages on that book is incorrect). So I'm thinking of reading The Night Circus. Of my slightly-over-500-page books, it seems most likely to be a quickish read lol.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments I got all excited there, because I recently bought The Night Circus on a Kindle daily deal, but when I look at it it says 401 pages. It's hard to find books for some of these prompts! I mean, I have plenty of doorstoppers in the house, but I don't think this challenge is the time to finally read War and Peace.

I know what you mean! I have plenty of 500+ page books, but not many I could realistically read by the 24th, even without trying to read 14 other books besides! Well my edition of The Night Circus is 516 pages (according to Goodreads at least; maybe I should check the actual book lol) so I'm going with that, even though apparently the page numbers vary hugely between editions! I was just trying to find something that was only a little more than 500 pages, rather than one of my 800 page books!

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments 11. Read at least 75% of a book outside:
Haiti Noir by Edwidge Danticat Haiti Noir, edited by Edwidge Danticat

Second book down! I listened to this audiobook on my commute, so basically 100% outside. It's a book of short noir stories set in Haiti.

Regarding 500+ page books, I'm reading Bridge of Clay. I've had this book on my TBR for about 2 years, but it's not what I expected. The Book Thief blew me away whereas Bridge is decent so far.

Are These My Basoomas I See Before Me? (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson, #10) by Louise Rennison Are These My Basoomas I See Before Me? (Confessions of Georgia Nicholson #10) by Louise Rennison

3/15 done! And I finally finished a series I started reading in high school (which was 15+ years ago). The series is set in England, which is a place I would like to visit.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments 2. Read a "short" book (under 250 pages):
The Hidden (Animorphs, #39) by K.A. Applegate The Hidden (Animorphs #39) by K.A. Applegate

4/15 done! This was probably the weirdest Animorphs book I've ever read, and I loved it. It was 121 pages.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments Snooping around the threads to see what others have picked for their Spring book. Noticed you have swapped out that category. I completely forgot we could do that! What a relief. I've really struggled to find something with a spring theme. Now I can just read whatever I feel like instead. :D

Yeah that category made me glad we have that option! Even if I wanted to read a book about spring in autumn lol I can't even think of a book that's set in spring. It's just not a season I think of as a book setting, unlike autumn which is so atmospheric.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments 4. Read a "spooky" book (your own definition of spooky is fine):
Ski Weekend (Fear Street, #10) by R.L. Stine Ski Weekend (Fear Street #10) by R.L. Stine

5/15 done! One third done the challenge, while two thirds through the time lol. But I am replacing a few of the remaining ones with quicker reads (with the unfortunate side effect that I won't be getting through as much of my library pile as I was hoping, but oh well). And I'm almost done my audiobook so I might be able to squeeze in one more audiobook for the challenge by the end of the week, too. There's hope yet! I'm starting my long book tonight; a lot rides on how deeply I get into The Night Circus.

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments 3. Pick 5 of your favorite genres and enter them in a randomizer. Read a book in that genre. (The randomizer gave me LGBTQ fiction.)
Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart

5. Read a book that is 75% one color on the cover.
Stargazing by Jen Wang Stargazing by Jen Wang

7/15 done! Two more books polished off today! Stargazing was a graphic novel; I swapped it in for a longer novel I had on my list before, in hopes of finishing this challenge lol. And Lily and Dunkin was an audiobook; I finished it early enough that I can squeeze in another one this week! So there's another swap that'll help!

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments So basically I have 1362 pages left, plus the rest of my ebook and a whole audiobook. That means that (if I read nothing more tonight except my ebook) I would have to read 340 pages a day for the rest of the week, plus a bit of my ebook at night, and listen to my audiobook on my commutes (that's the easy part lol). Hahahahaha. OK. *cracks knuckles*

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments 6. Read a book that was published in the last 18 months.
Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks

8/15 done! This might be the first time I've ever read the same book twice in one year lol. I first read this one in January, and it instantly became a favourite of mine, but I knew it would be even better to read it in autumn, because it's "like every autumn smell all at once".

Liander (The Towering Pile) Lavoie (liannelavoie) | 282 comments Well, I'm giving up, but I will continue to update with any challenge books I do finish. Last night I was going to read more after watching an episode of Sherlock, but then the ending was such that I had to watch another one lol. So I didn't read the amount I had to to finish the challenge. And tonight I'm seeing my mom so I probably won't get a whole lot done either. At this point it's definitely not possible to finish!

I'm still going to see if I can finish the four books I have in progress by the read-a-thon: my long book (The Night Circus), my book read when it's dark outside (Stars in Her Eyes), the book with an animal on its cover (The Other), and the book with an author whose name starts with L (Shouting at the Rain). Even that is a stretch! But we'll see!
