SOLVED. High school summer reading list-type book about a guy who’s an outsider in his village, he gets robbed, then a woman who is traveling has a baby & then dies? He takes in the baby (a girl) & everyone knows town loves her [s]

Basically he’s a farmer I think and he’s been hoarding his money, and he keeps it hidden in a hole by his fireplace? Something like that. Then he gets robbed and has nothing, but nobody in town really knows or cares about him. Then there’s this woman who is very clearly what literature refers to as a “fallen woman” and she has the baby (at his house??? Or maybe she has the baby and he finds it and she’s dead already?? That sounds right, like she died in the snow or something). And then as time passes, everyone in the town loves this girl and then some guy comes along and marries her. There’s definitely some parentage drama bc she doesn’t know about her mom.
This was something I read in high school (6-8 years ago probably) and it wasn’t new or anything, it’s definitely old. I think the title was the guy’s name. Help pls.
