Cam | 116 comments I'm feeling very confused about the last few chapters. They seem so random and thrown together. (view spoiler) It seems so unconvincing. Maybe she didn't know how to end the story...

I definitely see that, but I wonder if she did rush into the second marriage because she needed more freedom than what she got as a cook/ housekeeper. Another point to consider was that Sandro liked the artist and she wanted someone there for Sandro that was better than Charles?

Marilyn I understand her need to get away from the Redheads, but as the reader I was unsatisfied with the ending. It was abrupt and I agree to unconvincing. It felt like the author just tacked a happily ever after ending on her story.

How autobiographical is the story?

I am not sure how much is autobiographical. Everything I see says "Sisters by the River" is based on her childhood. Not much beyond Wikiapedia mention about Our Spoons Came from Woolworths being autobiographical.

How are the scenes about women’s health, childbirth, and abortion still relevant today?

Viv JM | 81 comments I kind of agree about the ending feeling rushed. Also, it did surprise me because I was convinced there would most certainly *not* be a happy ending!

I liked the oddness and quirkiness of the writing/story for example the whole Foxy scenario which made me laugh but then the sad scenes were also treated in a very similar, slightly abrupt way eg the scarlet fever and death of Fanny.

Overall, I am just not quite sure what to make of the book! I think I preferred The Vet's Daughter, the only other Comyns I have read but I definitely do enjoy her writing style and will read more.
