THE DEADLIEST TOURNAMENT IN THE WORLD—is not entered without peril.

Notorious for its danger, the Trial comes every two decades and tens of thousands show up to compete. They arrive from all over the lands, Centric and beyond; the reckless, the daring, and the hopeful.

Sixteen-year-old Viridian Acquarone is determined to go. Victory means glory, fame—a stab at being the next Elementals—but for her, it means greater still. Doomed by an unfair system, competing is the only way to rise and escape the poverty that crushes her family.

Yet opposition lies at every turn. Even after a risky escape, life at the Trial is harder than she’d ever imagined. Shunned for the mark that deems her inferior, Viridian faces hostile competitors while struggling with her own inability to control her power. And with creeping shadows and unauthorized attacks, it soon becomes clear that the Trial itself is being sabotaged. Someone is meddling with wicked intentions, but difficult times make unlikely allies.

Earithon. He’s the jokester, the witty one, sparkling—when he isn’t tripping over himself. But don’t be fooled by his carefree smile, a haunting question hides behind the facade.

Tempest. Silver hair and a heart made of glass, she’s got a perfect mask over a shattered past. Yearning for life yet unable to let go, she’s cold, efficient…and lonely.

Inferno. With eyes of gold and a touch that burns like fire, there’s a reason people call him a monster. Driven by vengeance, heedless of ruin, the only thing more dangerous than his hate is his love.

Death looms nigh on the horizon. When raging firestorms light up the night and wind cuts sharper than knives, four must come and rise above the rest.
