They take place when Cleopatra is 15 and 16, years before Caesar and Antony.

History:
At that time, Cleopatra's father and his 8 predecessors, have bankrupt Egypt. Her father ratcheted up the mess by plunging deeper into debt with enormous loans from Roman moneylenders to bribe himself back on the throne ... twice. Cleopatra officially becomes co-regent with her father, then queen (no marriage, just co-rulers). Somehow, in the four years she's comes to power, she's able to get the economy working enough to pay off the Roman loans. HOW she does it, is kind of an empty spot in historical records ... but she doesn't stop. By the time Augustus hauls back the Egyptian treasury to Rome many years later, there's so much gold it depresses the world price.

Caesar is in Gaul at this time, just invading Briton, but he's part of the story because he and two other Romans (the "First Triumvirate") control the Roman empire ... and one of them is doing something foolish that will break up the group leaving two ... who will probably fight a civil war ... and it affects Egypt because one them is its official "protector", and the other is not. Cleopatra has to play both sides of a political game.

You can see there's a lot to work with here.

In the stories, Cleopatra tries a variety of strategies to rebuild the empire and influence Roman politics ... drafting people who are more like your neighbors than Masterpiece Theater aristocrats. They have lives, they make mistakes, they form relationships.

This is not Roman "Cleopatra whore queen", it more closely follows the Egyptian and Arabic histories of her (see previous post about history background). Google "Virtuous Scholar".
